placement, not much more than a taster Level 2
15 days placement, aligned to QTS standards
AimHigher strand of the SAS (pilot) Like level 1,
but emphasis on WP 1st generation undergraduates.
3- Aims of the Student Associates Scheme 200608
- To raise levels of attainment and aspiration of
young people in schools and to contribute to the
Widening Participation agenda, particularly in
schools with pupils from areas of deprivation. - To contribute to the recruitment of able and
committed students to initial teacher training
(ITT), particularly in priority subjects and in
under-represented groups.
4Student Associates Scheme
- Students in HEIs do 15-day placements in schools,
supported by 15 hours induction and training. - Providers recruiting from most HEIs in England
- Providers funded 105 per SA per placement day,
to cover bursaries, school payments, admin,
training - SAs paid bursary of 40 per day
- All schemes work to the core programme
- Criterion 1 schools serving areas of deprivation
- Priority 1 secondary Maths, Physics, Chemistry
- Priority 2 secondary ICT, DT, MFL, RE, music,
other science
5Student Associates Scheme
- Approximately 16,000 students will take part in
the scheme 2006-08 - 5920 students will be secondary placements in
maths, physics and chemistry - 5120 students will be secondary placements in
other priority subjects - 4960 students will be placements in other
secondary subjects or in primary and foundation
stage

7Core Goal 1 Professional Behaviour Student
Associates are to learn how to behave
professionally in a school setting, to
demonstrate and promote in young people positive
values and attitudes, and to help to raise
aspirations of young people for learning in
general and for higher education (HE) in
particular.
8- Induction and training
- Student Associates will be introduced to
- a code of practice for their school placement
- how they should behave as a professional in a
school and classroom context and provide a
positive role model for young people - the Widening Participation agenda
- the need to raise the aspirations of some young
people in relation to learning in general and HE
in particular.
9Examples of achievements during school placement
experience
- They have behaved professionally in the school
and classroom and provided a positive role model
to young people, showing qualities such as
commitment, willingness to learn, reliability and
initiative - they have satisfied consistently the requirements
of the code of practice for their school
placement - they have planned and taken opportunities to
introduce young people to their own experience of
HE.
10Core Goal 6 Planning part or all of a lesson
- Student Associates are to learn how to plan and
structure part or all of a lesson which interests
and motivates young people and which promotes
learning.
11Induction and trainingStudent Associates will be
introduced to
- how lessons in their subject or phase are
structured and planned - how to plan for part or all of a lesson (with a
group or a class) in their subject or phase to
assist a teacher in the classroom.
12Examples of achievements during school placement
experience
- With the guidance of a teacher, they have planned
and delivered one or more lessons or parts of
lessons (with groups or a whole class) in their
subject or phase and reflected on their planning
and teaching.
13Core Goal 12 includes
- (for those interested in ITT) they have been able
to summarize their school experience achievements
in relation to a subset of QTS standards in a
Training Entry Profile (TEP)
