Title: The three wise men
1Lecture 28
Looking back on this years Christmas
2Christmas cards really frustrate me
3Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in
the days of Herod
the king, behold, there came wise men from the
east to Jerusalem,
4The three wise men
5 Saying, (to Herod) Where is he that is born King
of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the
east, and are come to worship him. When Herod the
king had heard these things, he was troubled,
and all Jerusalem with him.
6Why was Herod troubled?
- Why was all of Jerusalem troubled?
7The great king Herod was afraid of these guys??

10THESE WERE MAGI THE KING MAKERS
- RIDING WITH GOLD AND GIFTS FOR A GREAT KING
11Hardy warriors riding to battle with plumes in
their helmets, the heads and breasts of their
horses adorned with jewels.

13THEY CAME FROM IRAN WITH SUPOSEDLY 1000 RIDERS
14Herod was afraid when he heard they were going to
name a king of kings
- The people were afraid when they saw the army
15And when he had gathered all the chief priests
and scribes of the people together, he demanded
of them where Christ should be born. And they
said unto him, In Bethlehem of Judaea for thus
it is written by
the prophet,
16Herod is finally up to speed
- How did the wise men know where to go
17The Star
18Herod directs his men
And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said, Go and
search diligently
for the young child and when ye have found
him, bring me word again, that I may come and
worship him also
19 And being warned of God in a dream that they
(the wise men) should not return to Herod, they
departed into their own country another way.
And when they were departed, behold, the angel
of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream,
saying, Arise, and take the young child and his
mother, and flee into Egypt, and be thou there
until I bring thee word for Herod will seek the
young child to destroy him.
20What happens next?
21Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked of the
wise men, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth,
and slew all the children that were in
Bethlehem, and in all the coasts thereof, from
two years old and under, according to the time
which he had diligently enquired of the wise
men.
22Go over homework and check
23Homework
- Read pages 302 to 307
- Do problems 1 - 4 on page 307
24Pb(NO3)2 2 KI ? PbI2 2 KNO3

26So lets get back to the predicting net ionic
equationproblem
Na2SO4 BaCl2 ?
Na2SO4 aq) BaCl2(s)? 2NaCl(aq)BaSO4(s)
27Balancing the electrons on a net ionic equations
- After you Balance the elements
- Balance the electrons (charges)
28Once you get the simpler net ionic equation you
must make sure that the charges also balance
along with the atoms
29Fe(s) 2Ag(aq)?2Ag(s) Fe2(aq)
30K2SO4(aq) Ba(NO3)2(aq) ? BaSO4 (s) 2KNO3(aq)
- Net ionic equation is
- SO4-2(aq) Ba2(aq) ? BaSO4 (s)
31Finally the net ionic equation allows us to look
at the active part of an equation an determine if
it will occur
- Fe(s) 2Ag(aq) ? 2Ag(s) Fe2(aq)
Is iron metal going to lose 2 electrons to silver
(one each) Which metal is the He man and hold
the electron?
32How do you know if a reaction will occur. Why
dont they just stay the way the are
33In single and double replacement reactions we
know that one will overpower another
- Because
- Not all 1 charges are the same????
34Activity series
- A list describing which elements are the most
tenacious
Domination of the electrons
35An activity series will tell you who the big man
on campus is!!
36- Who is going to win the fight for magnetic
dominance
The fight for the electron
37 1) Ag Cu(NO3)2? ?2) Mg Pb(NO3)2 ? 3)
Al ZnNO3?4) Na H2O?5) Au CaCl2?6) 2KI
Pb(NO3)2 ?
Will the reaction occur
Will either the reactant or product be a
precipitate solid
38Which of the below reactions occur
Are the reactants or products a precipitate
39Bring up your Og 26 and fill it in from your
written notes
40Solubility Lab
- Get lab sheet from the computer
- Watch out with these chemicals
- Do not leave the area without going to the
bathroom and washing your hands with soap. The
lead compounds are dangerous.
41Be careful not to touch the dropper bottle tipto
the reactant mixture.
42You must wear goggles
- Do not email this lab--- you must type out the
ionic and net ionic equations by next class.
