Main Highlights
  • Background
  • Objectives
  • Preliminary Design Ideas
  • Block Diagrams
  • Timeline
  • Costs
  • Risks/Solutions

3
Background
  • Single rotating beacon light exists currently
  • Not very affective in direct sunlight
  • Turn signals and other flash patterns impossible
  • During previous race a beacon light burnt out
causing the team to borrow another one from UND
  • ASC guidelines specify lead and chase vehicles
must have roof-mounted flashing amber lights

4
Background
  • ASC Guidelines
  • Lead vehicle must travel within 500 meters of the
    solar car
  • Chase vehicle must follow directly behind the
    solar car
  • Must be visible in full sunlight

5
Background
  • Solar Team Requests
  • Left, right, and other flashing patterns
  • Wireless remote to control the lights
  • Power for lights come from car battery
  • Portable

6
Objectives
  • Totally wireless hand-held remote to control
lights on top of the lead and chase vehicles
  • Push buttons on remote for left, right, and other
    flashing patterns
  • Lights on top of chase and lead vehicles secured
    by magnets
  • Simple installation and removal of lights

7
Preliminary Design Ideas
  • Housing attached to lights which contains a
    microprocessor and receiver component
  • Microprocessor responsible for controlling the
    flashing patterns
  • Will contain an ON/OFF switch for power
    conservation
  • LED on housing signifies ON/OFF, as well as a
    transmission being received

8
Preliminary Design Ideas
  • Wireless hand-held remote will consist of push
buttons to activate flashing patterns, ON/OFF
    switch, LED display, microcontroller,
    transmission component, battery power supply
  • Should transmit over a range of ½ mile
  • Remote will be able to travel between either
    vehicle

Costs
  • Construction of light bar systems (3)
  • Transmitter/Receiver pair components
  • Microcontrollers
  • Transmitter housing
  • Miscellaneous buttons, wires, LEDs, various
    connectors, batteries, etc.

12
Risks
  • Interference with other solar car transmissions
  • Compliance with ASC guidelines
  • Funding of Project
  • Compatibility with any vehicle
  • Weather resistance of all exterior components
