  • Please check the demographics sheet on your desk
    and make changes if necessary. You can also sign
    up for conferences, complete the survey, and
    complete the map on your desk. We will be
    starting soon!
  • The kids took these pictures themselves. If
    your child does not have a picture, they chose
    not to take one today. ?

Welcome to 6th Grade!
  • Exciting and memorable year for students
  • Year of tremendously growth especially as writers
    and public speakers
  • Special activities designed to make the last year
    of elementary school memorable
  • Students become role models for 1st Grade Buddies
    in Ms. McCollums class

6th Grade Procedures
  • Check website if student forgot to copy homework
    or was absent
  • Students CANNOT call home for homework,
    instruments, lunches, projects, etc.
  • Trying to create independence and
    self-responsibility

Homework
  • About 60 minutes per night on average
  • Math homework nightly
  • Read 20 minutes nightly
  • 1-2 Reading Responses per week
  • Book projects about every 10 days
  • Social Studies homework 2-3 nights per week
  • Science homework 1-2 nights per week

Language Arts
  • Read independently every day
  • Try to find high-interest books for students
  • Will read at least one novel per marking period
    in school as a class or in literature circles
  • Writing is mainly nonfiction/researched based
  • Preparation for Elementary Performance Assessment
  • Large focus on presentation skills

  • Place student based on performance,
  • not potential
  • General guidelines from middle school are
  • Recommending for Honors (math example)
  • student has 94 average or above all marking
    periods, strong work ethic, highly motivated,
    responsible, excellent problem solver, organized,
    independent worker, needs minimal assistance
    after a concept is taught.
