MedPoint - MedAdmin Self Study Guide 3.4
2
Introducing MedPoint
  • What is MedPoint MedAdmin?
  • A clinical decision support tool.
  • Clinical decisions should not be based solely on
    information viewed on MedPoint.
  • A patient safety mechanism that incorporates the
    Five Rights of medication administration
  • A system that utilizes barcode technology at the
    point of care

3
Introducing MedPoint
  • Using MedPoint is easy
  • Scan your ID and enter a password
  • Scan the patient wrist band barcode
  • Scan the medication

4
FYI
  • In all instances throughout this guide the term
    select can be accomplished by
  • Touching the screen if you have touch screen
    computers.
  • Using the left mouse button.
  • Double tapping on a touch pad mouse.
  • Using the tab key and enter key.

5
Log In
  • Scan the barcode on your employee ID
  • If you do not have your ID badge you can type in
    your ID

6
Log In
  • Type in your password
  • Select the enter key or use your mouse to
    select login

7
Identify Patient
  • There are 3 ways to identify a patient and access
    their record.
  • Scan the patient wrist band barcode
  • Type in the patient account number
  • Select a patients name from a drop down menu
  • Of these, only scanning the patients wrist band
barcode does not require a second level patient
    identification.

8
Identify Patient
Method 1
  • Scan the barcode on the patient wrist band
  • Scanning the patient ID is considered a
positive identification and will save time

9
Identify Patient
Method 2
  • Type the patient account number in the Patient
    ID field
  • This allows viewing of information only. A
second step will be necessary to do anything
    besides viewing information

10
Identify Patient
Method 3
  • Select the patient from a drop down list
  • The patients names are available on the list
only after you have previously accessed the
    patient record
  • Selecting a patient from the list requires a
another step before you are allowed to do
    anything in the record

11
Identify Patient
  • If the patient record was accessed by Method 2 or
3, this warning appears when trying to do
    anything other than view information.
  • To go any further the patient ID must be verified
by either scanning the wrist band OR typing the
    account number.

12
Scanning the Patient
  • REMEMBER - Scanning the patient bar code
  • Is time saving
  • Is accurate
  • Is a positive patient identification the 1st
    time

13
More MedPoint Information
  • The Bridge MedPoint Medication Management System
receives patient order information from the
    pharmacy order entry system.
  • Ensuring that the pharmacy receives orders as
quickly as possible will help the orders to
display on the bedside device in a timely
    fashion.
  • Once the patient wrist band barcode has been
scanned, one of 2 screens will appear. If there
are no new orders, the patients medication
profile will be displayed. If there are new
orders to be confirmed the Orders screen will
display (Order Confirmation is covered in
    detail later in this program).

14
When Administering a Med Prior to Pharmacy Order
Entry
  • REMEMBER If the order has not been entered into
the pharmacy system, chances are the pharmacist
has not had the opportunity to review the
medication order. In this situation it is the
nurse who is responsible for making sure that the
appropriate checks are done prior to
    administering the medication.
  • If the medication you want to administer has a
barcode, scan it. There is no need to access the
    floorstock or formulary lists.
  • It should be the RARE occasion that requires the
nurse to go to the formulary list. Not all
medications on this list are approved for the
nurse to administer without pharmacy approval of
    the order.

15

Warnings and Alerts More to See
23
New ConceptCo-Signature
24
Co-Signature
  • What is Co-Signature why do we have it?
  • Co-signature is a second witness to a drug
    administration.
  • Drugs There are particular drugs, such as
insulin or chemotherapy that are considered high
risk might need a co-signature prior to
    administration.
  • Person - Certain people such as nursing students
may be required to obtain co-signatures before
    administering drugs.
  • Places - Certain units (oncology) might have a
policy that requires co-signature for all
    medication administrations.

25
Co-Signature - Required
  • When a specific drug requires a co-signature, the
pharmacy may use a comment to alert you.
  • After scanning the medication barcode, the dose
    detail screen will appear.

26
Co-Signature - Required
  • In any of the situations (drug, person or place)
that require a co-signature the dose detail
screen appears and there is a notice of
required next to the co-signature field.

27
Co-Signature - Required
  • A user who can be a co-signer would then need to
scan their ID badge while the cursor is in the
    co-signature field.

28
Co-Signature - Required
  • The co-signer then enters their password into the
password field on the Co-Sign Confirmation
    window.
  • Then select OK.

29
Co-Signature - Required
  • A user can never co-sign their own
administrations. A warning appears, alerting the
    user to this situation.
  • A user who attempts to co-sign but does not have
that privilege will receive this warning.

30
Co-Signature MAR View
  • On the MAR View the initials of both the
    administrator (1st initials) the co-signer (2nd
    initials) show.

New ConceptAllergy Alert
32
Allergy Alerts
  • What are Allergy Alerts?
  • Allergy alerts tell the nurse something about the
    allergy status of the patient.
  • Types of Allergy Alerts
  • No allergy information has been received.
  • New allergy information has been received.
  • Possible allergy or cross-sensitivity to the
medication being given has been detected.

33
Allergy Alerts
  • This alert is triggered when MedAdmin has not
received any allergy information from the other
system. This alert is seen each time the patient
is selected until allergy information is received
    by MedAdmin (even NKA).

34
Allergy Alerts
  • This alert is seen when new allergy information
has been received by MedAdmin. This alert is
seen only the first time the patient is selected
after new allergy information has been received.

35
Allergy Alerts
  • This warning displays when an allergy is detected
    during
  • Order Confirmation
  • OR
  • Med administration

36
Allergy Alerts
  • The nurse has 2 choices
  • Cancel button which stops the transaction.
  • Select a reason to continue and then the OK
button. NOTE MedAdmin requires a reason to
