THE REFUGEE PROBLEM

• Palestinians fled from their homes after the
  1948-9 war. (Source A on p.28.)
• Many lived in refugee camps that were set up by
  the United Nations. (Sources B-E, p. 28-9).
• Some refugees turned to violence as a solution.
  Others emigrated to new lives in the Middle East
  or the West.

THE PLO

• Palestine Liberation Organisation, 1964.
• Its aim was to unite all Palestinians in the
  struggle to win back their land.
• Yasser Arafat became leader in 1968.
• Arafat wanted to limit raids and bombings to
  Israeli territory. Others disagreed and claimed
  Western targets gained more publicity. (Sources A
  B, p. 32).
