All The Generations Before Me
All the generations before me contributed me
Little by little so I will emerge here in
Jerusalem All at once , like a prayer house or a
philanthropy . That compels . My name is the name
of my contributors . That compels . I approach
the age of my fathers death My will has many
patches, I have to change my life and my
death Day by day, to fulfill all the
prophecies That prophesied me . So they wont be
a lie. That compels. I passed my fortieth year.
There are jobs I cannot get. If I were in
Auschwitz they wouldnt have sent me to work,
they would have burned me right away. That
compels.

Contributors Of Yehuda In the poem, Yehuda
Amichai refers to the tribe Yehuda. Tribe Yehuda
is one of the 12 tribes of Israel. From all the
tribes, only tribe Yehuda has remained. A long
time ago, all the tribes were united, but the
land was divided to 2 kingdoms Israel and
Yehuda. All the land was conquered by Babylon,
which exiled all the Israeli people. The
connection between the contributors and the poet
is that his name is Yehuda .
4
Jerusalem it's the only city that has
connections to the biggest three religions
Judaism , Islam and Christian . The city was
chosen by God who told the King David to build
his capital in the land which they conquered from
the Jebusites. . David turns this land to his
capital and his son Shlomo builds ( in Jerusalem
), the first temple there. . After the first
temple was destroyed by Babylon , there wasnt
a temple in Jerusalem for a few centuries. . A
few years later the exiles who returned from
Babylon built the second temple but it also got
destroyed. . Now , Jerusalem is our capital, but
only in " The Six Day War " in 1967 the all
city was ours and united. Until then, east
Jerusalem was in the hand of the Jordan. . For us
Jerusalem is a strong connection to the Judaism
, we have important places there like The
Western Wall ( which is a part of the temple that
was destroyed ),our parliament the Knesset, and
also Yad Vashem- The Holocaust Museum .

Auschwitz Auschwitz is the name of a
concentration camp and a death camp in
Poland. Auschwitz 3 is a work camp that belongs
to the German industry in Auschwitz. More than 1
million Jews were killed in the gas cells and
also by execution. The Nazis killed the children
and the women and kept the strong men to do the
work from the morning until the evening and if
someone got tired or sick they killed him in a
second. For us, the Jews, Auschwitz is a symbol
of the suffering, the pain, the evil and the
extent of the cruelty of human nature. Also it
shows us what will happen to us if there is
nobody to protect us and save us. Amichai is
using Auschwitz in the poem to show us that he is
very old, tired, weak and desperate that even in
Auschwitz, the Nazis would have killed him
instead of using him in work ..
6
Patches The life of Yehuda Amichai has been
affected from a lot of actions and persons who
changed, his way of thinking and his way of life.

7
Compels It means that all the things that we do
in our lives must be worthy and to contain the
tradition of the Jewish people, continue the
existence of the Jews. Everything we do in our
lives obliges us to continue Judaism.
8
Prophecies in Judaism the prophecies are a very
important part of our religion because in the
bible there were many prophets and the most known
of them is Moses!!! And the most known prophecy
is God told Abraham that his offspring would be
as many as the stars in the sky. The prophets
were actually the voice of God. Yehuda Amichai
was a bit arrogant by saying that just by being a
Jew in Israel, that speaks the holy language,
Hebrew, its enough to ensure the preservation of
Judaism. All Jews should speak Hebrew, live in
the holy land Israel- and keep the Jewish
tradition.
9
Soul Searching In Judaism, the soul searching
is very important because as a Jew, it is part of
the tradition to do it. To choose between good
and bad, right and wrong, moral or immoral. As a
Jew, we do it at Yom Kippur. It is a holiday
where Heavens gates are opened and we ask for
forgiveness from God and from the people we
hurt..
