Hands-On Handhelds
  • Laura Davison Rick Brewer
  • Medical Center Library
  • University of Kentucky Libraries

KHECC Conference September 29, 2005
2
Background
  • Perceived need for PocketPCs due to
  • Rumors of hospital standard selection.
  • Wider range of wireless access.
  • Newly developed products such as PubMed On Tap
    (PMOT), and PubMed Anywhere.
  • Questions from patrons.
  • Need to educate our staff.

3
Prior Handheld Experience
  • Palm only environment.
  • No wireless access.
  • Developed class on medical resources, but several
challenges including variety of devices, lack of
    cradles, security, etc.

4
Palm Class
  • Used Palm Emulator to demonstrate resources
however very time consuming and difficulty
    manipulating. Example Micromedex
  • Available from the Palm website
  • http//www.palmos.com/dev/tools/emulator
  • http//www.palmos.com/dev/support/docs/emulato

Instructional Needs
  • Heavy hands-on instruction, including cradles
    with each device.
  • Provide class participants with the same device,
    loaded with the same programs.
  • Instructor(s) have capability to display directly
    from the handheld, no emulations.

7
Plan for New Training Class
  • Examined available devices, and selected Dell
    Axim X50s with wireless capability.
  • Discovered an inexpensive cable (Dells
Presentation Bundle) to connect handheld to
    projector for live instruction.
  • Researched newly developing medical resources
    formatted for handhelds.http//www.nlm.nih.gov/mo

  • Must be directly tied to Strategic Plan Goal(s)
    and Objective(s)
  • Formal submission of brief proposal (250 words or
    less) an itemized budget
  • Limit of 5,000

proactive role in providing exceptional services
that support and anticipate the teaching and
research need of our users and allow users to
    become more self-sufficient.
  • Objective AIntegrate library information
resources into the educational and clinical
    programs.

Equipment Features
  • Two expansion slots for memory cards or memory
    sticks.
  • Some familiar programs such as PocketWord,
    PocketExel, Windows Media, and Solitaire!
  • Two built-in wireless standards
  • 802.11b
  • Bluetooth

14
Challenges
  • PMOT died when it was reinvented as MEDLINE
Database on Tap (MD on Tap), it was only
    available for Palms.
  • Reliability of wireless network.
  • Awkwardness with basic operation of device.
  • Hospital still hasnt selected a standard format
    between Palm and PocketPC.

15
Challenges (cont.)
  • Difficult to stay up to date with products
    running on both OS platforms.
  • Security issues with allowing class participants
to install software on MCL Computer Lab machines.
  • Still not enough built-in memory. Example of
WISER needing 14.5 MB of RAM. http//wiser.nlm.nih
