Learning Object - Definition

4
What is it?
  • Co-operative Learning Object Exchange (CLOE)
  • A database (hosted by the University of Waterloo)
containing Learning Objects (LOs) submitted by
    different universities and colleges across
    Ontario and Memorial University
  • Goal A fair exchange of academic content

5
Peer-review process
  • Author submits LO to CLOE database
  • LO goes through an evaluation process
  • LO is then passed on to the Editor-in-chief
  • Two instructional design reviewers (IDRs) and two
subject matter experts (SMEs) review the LO

Nipissing face-to-face meeting

    University in North Bay

Challenges 1
  • Lack of reward for reviewers
  • Novelty of Learning Objects
  • Lack of time
  • Lack of self-identified competence (i.e. lack of
    training)
  • Awkwardness of the paper-based process
  • How to define a learning object

Challenges 2
  • Review criteria is not designed specifically for
Instructional Design Reviewers (IDR) or Subject
    Matter Experts (SME)
  • Misunderstanding of terms in Review Form
  • Confusion about why we peer review LO
  • Just another Web-based stuff
  • Most dont understand the importance of LO
