• The good news

  US overall has improved
• More US adults are keeping their natural teeth
• The average number of teeth per person affected
  by dental caries has decreased

• The bad news
• Dental decay remains the most common chronic
  childhood disease in the U.S
• By age 17, more than 80 percent of U.S.
  adolescents are affected by this disease
• Severe periodontal disease affects
• 14 percent of adults ages 45 to 54
• 23 percent of 65- to 74-years old
