• Long ago in Appalachia there was a girl named
  Ashpet, who was hired by Widow Hooper and her two
  daughters, Myrtle and Ethel. Every day Ashpet
  had to do all of the work, chopping wood, cooking
  up supper, everything.

• Myrtle and Ethel were jealous of Ashpet, though,
  because even though she did all the work, Ashpet
  was always fresh- faced. When anyone came over to
  visit, they would hide her under a washtub, not
  wanting anyone to see her.

• Summer came, and the crops were laid by. The
  folk of Eagles Nest Mountain gathered for a big
  church meeting.
• Ashpet was left behind to do chores. She
  didnt notice that the fire went out in the fire
  place.

• Widow Hooper was furious the next morning.
  She told her daughter, Myrtle, to go to Grannys
  house to get some fire. Granny said, Brush my
  hair, first, my dear, but Myrtle refused, so she
  didnt get fire. Her mother was mad. The same
  thing happened to Ethel.

• Finally she sent Ashpet, when she got there she
  knocked on the door and asked if she could have
  some fire. Granny said But first you must brush
  my hair, and she did and then she got her fire
  and went back to the house and put it in the
  fireplace.

• After the meeting the doctors son and Ashpet
  went for a walk. She had to be home by midnight,
  so she took off her shoe and threw it in a bush.
  Do you want me to take you home? asked the
  Doctors son, yes but first will you help me find
  my other shoe. While he was looking Ashpet ran
  home.

• One day, Granny came to the house when Ethel,
  Myrtle, and Widow Hooper were at their church
  meeting. Ashpet and granny went outside, and
  granny was magical. She made the house jump. When
  Ashpet went inside she found a red dress and put
  it on and went to the meeting. She found a seat,
  but everyone stared at her, even the doctors
  son.

• While Ashpet was going to the kitchen the
  doctors son came and Knocked on the door and
  Myrtle and Ethel put Ashpet under a wash tub.
  Widow Hopper opened the door and asked What can
  I do for you?. Ive been to every house, said
  the doctors son. Then Widow Hooper called to
  Myrtle and told her to come down, then she tried
  on the shoe and it didnt fit, the same with
  Ethel.

• Just about when the doctors son was going to
  leave he tripped over the wash tub and saw Ashpet
  with the other shoe on, and she tried on the shoe
  and it fit her. They left and got married, but
  Widow Hopper said to the doctors son that Ashpet
  is still hired for me for two more years, but
  they didnt listen to Widow Hooper.
