depression as cause - Community is open to a variety of
interventions, including medications, group
support and education. - Themes Identified--Consumer Groups
- Symptoms observed or experienced similar to
other studies - Isolation, not eating, not interested in
activities, etc. - However, consumer group reported more suicidal
thoughts actions than providers - Poverty and fear of violence in their
community reported as major contributors to
depression - Some community members have a strong desire
and great ability to help others - Helpful interventions

- Education about depression

group support)

Committee(CAC) - Recruitment conducted in collaboration with CAC
members - Informed consent prior to data collection
- Co-facilitation of group interviews
- All interviews audio taped, transcribed,
translated back-translated - Observations during group interviews recorded in
field notes - Transcript and field note analysis conducted
- Study Aims

knowledge and barriers and enhancers for
utilization of current MH resources - Work with consumers and providers to develop
recommendations for culturally sensitive
sustainable collaborative interventions to
adequately meet the depression needs in the
target population.
