1 Timothy 5.17-23 Give a bonus to leaders who do
a good job, especially the ones who work hard at
preaching and teaching. Scripture tells us,
"Don't muzzle a working ox" and "A worker
deserves his pay."  Don't listen to a complaint
against a leader that isn't backed up by two or
three responsible witnesses.  If anyone falls
into sin, call that person on the carpet. Those
who are inclined that way will know right off
they can't get by with it.  God and Jesus and
angels all back me up in these instructions.
Carry them out without favoritism, without taking
sides. Don't appoint people to church leadership
positions too hastily. If a person is involved in
some serious sins, you don't want to become an
unwitting accomplice. In any event, keep a close
check on yourself. And don't worry too much about
what the critics will say. Go ahead and drink a
little wine, for instance it's good for your
digestion, good medicine for what ails you.

Acts 14.23 Paul and Barnabas appointed elders
for them in each church and, with prayer and
fasting, committed them to the Lord, in whom they
had put their trust.
8
1 Peter 5.1-4 To the elders among you, I appeal
as a fellow elder, a witness of Christ's
sufferings and one who also will share in the
glory to be revealed Be shepherds of God's flock
that is under your care, serving as overseersnot
because you must, but because you are willing, as
God wants you to be not greedy for money, but
eager to serve not lording it over those
entrusted to you, but being examples to the
flock. And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you
will receive the crown of glory that will never
fade away.
9
Titus 1.5-9 The reason I left you in Crete was
that you might straighten out what was left
unfinished and appoint elders in every town, as I
directed you. An elder must be blameless, the
husband of but one wife, a man whose children
believe and are not open to the charge of being
wild and disobedient. Since an overseer is
entrusted with God's work, he must be
blamelessnot overbearing, not quick-tempered,
not given to drunkenness, not violent, not
pursuing dishonest gain. Rather he must be
hospitable, one who loves what is good, who is
self-controlled, upright, holy and disciplined.
He must hold firmly to the trustworthy message as
it has been taught, so that he can encourage
others by sound doctrine and refute those who
oppose it.
10
1 Timothy 3.1-15 The saying is trustworthy If
anyone aspires to the office of overseer, he
desires a noble task. Therefore an overseer must
be above reproach, the husband of one wife,
sober-minded, self-controlled, respectable,
hospitable, able to teach, not a drunkard, not
violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover
of money. He must manage his own household well,
with all dignity keeping his children submissive,
for if someone does not know how to manage his
own household, how will he care for Gods church?
He must not be a recent convert, or he may become
puffed up with conceit and fall into the
condemnation of the devil. Moreover, he must be
well thought of by outsiders, so that he may not
fall into disgrace, into a snare of the devil.
11
1 Timothy 3.1-15 continued  Deacons, likewise,
are to be men worthy of respect, sincere, not
indulging in much wine, and not pursuing
dishonest gain. They must keep hold of the deep
truths of the faith with a clear conscience. They
must first be tested and then if there is
nothing against them, let them serve as
deacons. In the same way, their wives are to be
women worthy of respect, not malicious talkers
but temperate and trustworthy in everything. A
deacon must be the husband of but one wife and
must manage his children and his household well.
Those who have served well gain an excellent
standing and great assurance in their faith in
Christ Jesus. Although I hope to come to you
soon, I am writing you these instructions so
that, if I am delayed, you will know how people
ought to conduct themselves in God's household,
which is the church of the living God, the pillar
and foundation of the truth.
