Three boys are in the schoolyard bragging about
their fathers. The first boy says, "My Dad
scribbles a few words on a piece of paper, he
calls it a poem, they give him 50." The second
boy says, "That's nothing. My Dad scribbles a few
words on a piece of paper, he calls it a song,
they give him 100." The third boy says, "I got
you both beat. My Dad scribbles a few words on a
piece of paper, he calls it a sermon. And it
takes eight people to collect all the money!"

everyone among you not to think more highly of
himself than he ought to think but to think so
as to have sound judgment, as God has allotted to
each a measure of faith.
8
Proverbs 1310 (NKJV)
By pride comes nothing but strife, but with the
well-advised is wisdom.
9
Proverbs 112 (NKJV)
When pride comes, then comes shame but with the
humble is wisdom.
10
Proverbs 2124 (NKJV)
A proud and haughty man Scoffer is his name
He acts with arrogant pride.

But humility goes before honor.

spirit before a fall. 19 Better to be of a
humble spirit with the lowly, than to divide the
spoil with the proud.
14
Love Is About Dying To SELF
If love is humble and others-directed, then love
is death to the old man.
Death to the self-righteous,self-exalting,
attention-seeking, whining, pouting,
self-pitying me.
15
Luke 736-39 (NKJV)
36 Now one of the Pharisees was requesting Him
to dine with him, and He entered the Pharisees
house and reclined at the table.  37 And there
was a woman in the city who was a sinner and
when she learned that He was reclining at the
table in the Pharisees house, she brought an
alabaster vial of perfume, 38 and standing
behind Him at His feet, weeping, she began to wet
his feet with her tears, and
kept wiping them with the hair of her head, and
kissing His feet and anointing them with the
perfume. 39 Now when the Pharisee who had
invited Him saw this, he said to himself, If
this man were a prophet He would know who and
what sort of person this woman is who is touching
Him, that she is a sinner.
16
Luke 740-45 (NKJV)
40 And Jesus answered him, Simon, I have
something to say to you. And he replied, Say
it, Teacher. 41 A moneylender had two debtors
one owed five hundred denarii, and the other
fifty. 42 When they were unable to repay, he
graciously forgave them both. So which of them
will love him more?
43 Simon answered and said, I suppose the one
whom he forgave more. And He said to him, You
have judged correctly. 44 Turning toward the
woman, He said to Simon, Do you see this woman?
I entered your house you gave Me no water for My
feet, but she has wet My feet with her tears and
wiped them with her hair. 45 You gave Me no
kiss but she, since the time I came in, has not
ceased to kiss My feet.
17
Luke 746-47 (NKJV)
46 You did not anoint My head with oil, but she
anointed My feet with perfume. 47 For this
reason I say to you, her sins, which are many,
have been forgiven, for she loved much but he
who is forgiven little, loves little.
18
1 Corinthians 127-29 (GWT)
27 But God chose what the world considers
nonsense to put wise people to shame. God chose
what the world considers weak to put what is
strong to shame. 28 God chose what the world
considers
ordinary and what it despises what it considers
to be nothing in order to destroy what it
considers to be something.  29 As a result, no
one can brag in Gods presence.
19
Matthew 53 (KJV)
Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the
kingdom of heaven.
20
Matthew 1624-25 (KJV)
24 Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If
any man will come after me, let him deny himself,
and take up his cross, and follow me.  25 For
whosoever will save his life shall lose it and
whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall
find it.
21
Matthew 1128-30 (KJV)
28 Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy
laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke
upon you, and learn of me for I am meek and
lowly in heart and ye shall find rest unto your
souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is
light.
22
Philippians 23-8 (NASB)
  • 3 Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit,
but with humility of mind regard one another as
    more important than yourselves
  • do not merely look out for your own personal
interests, but also for the interests of others.
  • 5 Have this attitude in yourselves which was
    also in Christ Jesus,

23
Philippians 23-8 (NASB)
6 who, although He existed in the form of God,
did not regard equality with God a thing to be
grasped,  7 but emptied Himself, taking the form
of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness
of men.  8 Being found in appearance as a man,
He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the
point of death, even death on a cross.
24
James 41-10
1 What is the source of quarrels and conflicts
among you? Is not the source your pleasures that
wage war in your members? 2 You lust and do not
have so you commit murder. You are envious and
cannot obtain so you fight and quarrel. You do
not have because you do not ask. 3 You ask and do
not receive, because you ask with wrong motives,
so that you may spend it on your pleasures.
25
James 41-10
  • You adulteresses, do you not know that friendship
with the world is hostility toward God? Therefore
whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes
    himself an enemy of God.
  • 6 Therefore it says, God is opposed to the
proud, but gives grace to the humble.

26
Proverbs 616-17 (NASB)
16 There are six things which the Lord hates,
yes, seven which are an abomination to Him 17
Haughty eyes . . . (a proud look)
27
Proverbs 3011-13 (NASB)
11 There is a kind of man who curses his father,
and does not bless his mother. 12 There is a
kind who is pure in his own eyes, yet is not
washed from his filthiness. 13 There is a kind
oh how lofty are his eyes! And his eyelids are
raised in arrogance.
28
1 Corinthians 46 (NASB)
Now these things, brethren, I have figuratively
applied to myself and Apollos for your sakes, so
that in us you may learn not to exceed what is
written, so that no one of you will become
arrogant in behalf of one against the other.
Some members had become so inflatedwith pride in
their gifts that they thoughttheir teaching was
superior to others.
29
1 Corinthians 47-10 (NKJV)
7 For who makes you differ from another? And
what do you have that you did not receive? Now if
you did indeed receive it, why do you boast as if
you had not received it? 8 You are already full!
You are already rich! You have reigned as kings
without usand indeed I could wish you did reign,
that we also might reign with you!
9 For I think that God has displayed us, the
apostles, last, as men condemned to death for we
have been made a spectacle to the world, both to
angels and to men.  10 We are fools for Christs
sake, but you are wise in Christ! We are weak,
but you are strong! You are distinguished, but
we are dishonored!
30
1 Corinthians 411-14 (NKJV)
11 To the present hour we both hunger and
thirst, and we are poorly clothed, and beaten,
and homeless.  12 And we labor, working with our
own hands. Being reviled, we bless being
persecuted, we endure
13 being defamed, we entreat. We have been made
as the filth of the world, the offscouring of all
things until now. 14 I do not write these things
to shame you, but as my beloved children I
warn you.
31
1 Corinthians 418-19 (NASB)
18 Now some have become arrogant, as though I
were not coming to you. 19 But I will come to
you soon, if the Lord wills, and I shall find
out, not the words of those who are arrogant but
their power.
Some members had become so inflatedwith pride
that they even challengedthe authority of the
apostle Paul.
32
1 Corinthians 52 (NASB)
You have become arrogant and have not mourned
instead, so that the one who had done this deed
would be removed from your midst.
Some members had become so inflatedwith pride
that their eagerness for afollowing resulted
in tolerationof open sin in their midst.
33
1 Corinthians 81-2 (NASB)
  • 1 Now concerning things sacrificed to idols, we
know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge makes
    arrogant, but love edifies.
  • If anyone supposes that he knows anything, he has
not yet known as he ought to know

Some members had become so inflatedwith pride in
their knowledge of Gods truththat they despised
those who struggled with it.
34
Love Doesnt BehaveLike A Windbag
Love means we dont talk much about our own
accomplishments. Love says, Im interested in
YOUR accomplishments. Im interested in making
YOU look good. Love means we dont always have a
better story than the one we just heard. Love
says, I want to hear more about you and your
experiences!
35
What Pride Says
  • See how wonderful I am
  • We want to be recognized, applauded, admired
and celebrated we want people to know our titles
and degrees, popularity and talents, etc.
  • Do we preachers/teachers love the limelight, the
praises, the followings, the recognition? (Matt.
    61)
  • Do we like to give deep and insightful answers in
Bible class so people will admire how wise and
    spiritually mature we are?

36
What Pride Says
  • See how wonderful I am
  • Do we like to have parties so others will admire
our home, our cooking, our hospitality?
  • Do we constantly talk about our work so people
will know how important we are?
  • Do we as parents brag endlessly about our kids?
  • Behind this bragging is the ugly lie that the
achievements of the children visibly demonstrate
    the superiority of the parents.

37
What Pride Says
Im never weak Some men never ask for help,
never need a handout, never vulnerable, always
strong, never ask for directions, never admit
pain, never show tears. A man should only cry
twice in his life once when hes born, once when
his mother dies.
38
What Pride Says
Im never wrong Do we find it difficult to
admit a mistake, to apologize? Do we blame
everyone and everything else? In school Im a
good student the professor is a bad
teacher. Social settings Im a friendly
person. Why are people so unwelcoming? Church
I have a good heart. The preachers sermons are
weak.
39
What Pride Says
I dont need your suggestions. Not open to
teaching, wise counsel, correction. Pride, at its
root, is insecurity. We need to decide in life
whether we want to BE wise or APPEAR wise.
40
What Pride Says
I dont deserve this, its just not fair.
Constant self-pity, whining, complaining. Boastin
g says, I deserve admiration because I have
achieved so much. Self-pity says, I deserve
admiration because I have sacrificed so much.
41
What Pride Says
You arent acting the way you ought to act.
Do we get angry when others are not behaving the
way they think they should? Store clerk is
impolite, server at restaurant is negligent,
teenager is rude, mother lets kids run wild in
the store, etc.
42
Love Is About Dying To SELF
If love is humble and others-directed, then love
is death to the old man.
Death to the self-righteous,self-exalting,
attention-seeking, whining, pouting,
self-pitying me.
43
If I Am Arrogant
I Am Nothing
44
