Palestinian Old Testament
  • In 6 BC, Jerusalem was destroyed, and the Jewish
nation disappeared. (Israel as a nation came into
    existence only in 1949!).
  • The Jews were scattered all over the world.
  • Singa ra Filipinos natan!
  • Jewish religious leaders were concerned about
saving the faith of the people.
  • Thus, the need for them to determine the books of
    their Bible.
  • In the 1st Century of the Christian era, the Jews
had not yet completed the list of their sacred
    writings.
  • Which of course means the Old Testament.

8
Kanian
  • The compilation of official books recognized by
the Jewish community as inspired and containing
    authentic doctrine was done.
  • We call this canon, meaning norm or rule for
it serves as a rule of life for believers.
  • The books that have been rejected came to be
known as apocryphal (meaning hidden) since they
    contain questionable teachings.
  • This Jewish community of PALESTINE accepted 39
    books as being sacred books.
  • This is called the PALESTINIAN CANON.

Septuagint (The Seventy)
  • During THE SAME PERIOD
  • An important Jewish colony flourished in
ALEXANDRIA, in EGYPT with over 100,000
    population.
  • They did not understand Hebrew anymore.
  • They translated the OT into Greek, the language
they were using, and used these for their
    worship.
  • This is called SEPTUAGINT (Based on the old story
that they were miraculously performed by 70 wise
    men).
  • The SEPTUAGINT has more than 39 books. Some texts
were included, some translated from Hebrew and
    others written directly in Greek!
  • THERE ARE NOW TWO LISTS OR CANONS OF THE
    SCRIPTURES of the JEWS
  • The Palestinian
  • The Alexandrian

11
The Christians
  • The Christians who learned that Jesus did not
come to abolish but to fulfill and complete the
Old Testament recognized in their Bible the books
    used by the Jews!
  • But there were two lists!
  • They opted for the Greek version the
Alexandrian, the longer list or canon.
  • because Greek was the language they too
    understood.

12
To avoid confusion by the Jews
  • Around 2nd century, the Jews seeing that the
Christians used the Old Testament as part of
their Bible, DECIDED to define their canon.
  • In reaction against the Christians, they CHOSE
    the shorter PALESTINIAN CANON.

13
What Luther started
  • 16th century, Martin Luther separated from the
Catholic Church and initiated the Protestant
    schism.
  • He introduced in his new church the shorter canon
    (Palestinian canon), abandoning the tradition
maintained by the Catholic Church for 15
    centuries!
  • The reformists were greatly distressed that the
seven extra books were in Greek, so they
    claimed.
  • They considered Hebrew as the only religious
    language.

14
The Catholic Church
  • In 1545-1563, the Council of Trent defined the
    Catholic canon of the Scriptures.
  • All the 46 books of the Old Testament.
  • 27 books of the New Testament

15
A Difficult Name
  • The seven books being the subject of controversy
which were accepted in the canon much later were
    the given the name DEUTOROCANONICALS.
  • From Greek Deutero, second to signify that they
passed through a second moment of the canonical
    formation.
  • The 39 books which were never disputed were
    called PROTOCANONICALS.
  • From the Greek, Protos, first since they have
been included in the canon from the start.

16
Modern Findings
  • It has been found that NOT ALL the
    deuterocanonical books have been written
    originally in Greek.
  • Qumran scrolls
  • Book of Tobit was earlier composed in Aramaic
  • Judith, Baruch, Sirach and 1 Maccabees were in
    Hebrew.
  • Only 2 Maccabees and Wisdom could be considered
as having been written in Greek.

17
Present Practice
  • In recent years, signs indicated a return to a
more moderate attitude on the part of the
    Protestants about the 7 books.
  • They realize that certain biblical doctrines
(such as resurrection of the dead, the theme of
the angels, the concept of retribution, the
notion of purgatory) started to appear in these 7
    books.
  • To omit them is to cut off a precious link in the
progress and unity of revelation, and results in
the abrupt leap towards the New Testament.
  • Some Protestant bibles have included the 7 books,
though not granted the same value as the rest.
