Penn Wood Primary and Nursery School is based in
North Slough
The School was rebuilt In February 2007 as part
of a PFI initiative by Wates and Slough Borough
Council

Designing the New School
  • Began 5 years ago
  • Was visionary and ambitious
  • Involved all stakeholders
  • Needed to reflect the schools culture and aims.

Designing the New School
  • Excavation was minimised to reduce the impact on
    landfill sites thus reducing the vehicular impact
    on the local community
  • A high percentage of the external cedar cladding
    boards used came from a sustainable source
  • Solar control glazing maximised the use of
    natural ventilation
  • Individual heating and control zones are in place
  • Low capacity toilet cisterns, spray taps and time
    delay showers were installed.

Designing the New School
  • Energy saving technologies and techniques
    ensured that the school complied with targets set
    by the ITN and DfCSF
  • Carbon performance rating for the school is set
    below the guidance by DfCSF and ITN
  • The school has high efficiency boilers. Pipework
    distribution routes minimise energy loss.
  • Good Day Lighting and the facility to dim the
    lighting helps to further reduce energy
    consumption.

  • The school was eager to maximise
  • the grounds and wood available.
  • The dipping pond and courtyard
  • feature strongly in the life of the
  • school.
  • Pupils are encouraged to take
  • responsibility for their own actions
  • We have a zero tolerance
  • approach to litter
  • There have been no incidents of
  • graffiti since we moved into our
  • new school.
  • The indoor outdoor teaching
  • manifesto is transparent in
  • the every day life of school day.
