4Codes Standards UL 1449 3rd Edition / IEEE
C62.41
- Overview
- Effective September 29, 2009
- Name Change to Surge Protective Device
- Category A,B,C changes to Type 1,2,3,4
- New Product Testing Requirements
- Inclusion of Nominal Discharge Current In
5Codes Standards UL 1449 3rd Edition
- Effective September 29, 2009
- All Surge Protective Devices manufactured after
this date must be compliant with UL testing
parameters and performance ratings - Many manufacturers are opting to be tested at
other NRTLs - Make sure specifiers are aware of the difference
when it comes to components and integral offers,
i.e. if component is not Recognized or Listed by
Underwriters Laboratories, the entire assemblys
Listing may be in question. (local inspector
may question, UL may not back entire assy) - ALL Surgelogic devices will be listed with
Underwriters Laboratories by September 29, 2009

- Product Testing Changes
- Measured Limiting Voltage title changes
- 2nd ED.- Surge Voltage Rating (SVR)
- 3rd ED.- Voltage Protection Rating (VPR)
- Testing parameters (Increased performance)
- 2nd ED.- 6kV/0.5kA
- 3rd ED.- 6kV/3kA (6 times the current level)
- 3 impulses per mode of 6kV, 3kA using 8/20 wave
shape - 15 impulses per mode of 6kV, NDC (In)
- 3 impulses per mode of 6kV, 3kA
- Product must be within 10 of baseline readings
in determining In ratings

- Product Testing Changes
- New Nominal Discharge Current (In) Values on
label - Type 1 10kA, 20kA
- Type 2 3kA, 5kA, 10kA, 20kA
- Type 3 3kA

- What Will Be Different with Surgelogic Products?
- The only noticeable difference will be In and VPR
ratings on product labels - Form, Fit and Function and literature will remain
the same throughout lineup - Part numbers will not be changing
- For ease of transition the familiar TVSXXXXX
numbering protocol will remain the same until
next Digest - Devices will remain Surgelogic branded, not
