Title: What is a Root Canal
1What is a Root Canal?
2A root canal, also known as endodontic therapy,
is a method of controlling infection on the
inside of the tooth. The pulp chamber and root
canal system becomes infected by bacteria
introduced into the tooth by decay or traumatic
fracture.

3First Step
The first step of treatment, after an accurate
diagnosis procedure, is to achieve profound
anesthesia. We will use local anesthetics,
nitrous oxide analgesia, and medications in any
combination necessary for the individual patient.
4Sometimes, the infection will spread past the end
of the tooth and involve the surrounding tissues.
When this happens, antibiotic treatment may be
required.
5Once the patient is fully anesthetized, we will
measure the length of the tooth and clean out the
internal portion of the tooth with small tapered
sterile circular files.
6After the pulp chamber and root canal system have
been thoroughly cleaned, disinfected and dried,
the tooth is filled with an inert biocompatible
material to the predetermined end of the tooth,
and coated with a tissue friendly sealer. This
procedure may also be completed during the first
appointment.
7This completes the root canal phase of the
treatment. In most situations, the tooth
structure has already been damaged. The damage
must be restored, or the root canal treatment is
at risk of failing prematurely. This is
usually accomplished with a crown and possibly a
build-up to provide and adequate foundation for
the crown. If this is not completed, the tooth
is significantly weakened and could fracture and
cause failure to the root canal treatment.
