5Teachers Get To Teach
The goal of all programs at Castleberry High
School is to allow teachers to spend more time
teaching and less time doing administrative
tasks. All programs we speak of today, are
supported and managed by the Administrative and
or Leadership team at Castleberry High School.
Students have to take ownership in the learning
process these programs foster that
commitment.

16Friday Programs Study Hall
- What Are Our Main Objectives?
- Reward students for attempting school work
- We only allow work to be accepted in the week it
is taught this creates a sense of urgency in
our students and ownership in thier learning. - Allow students to seek help for a failed
assignment they attempted and earn passing grade. - Create a program that encourages students to seek
help on academic work - A 75 or below on any assignment is an automatic
placement in study hall for any class. A grade
of 80 may be earned on re-done assignments. - Create a culture that we do not rescue students
at the end of a grading period Our academic
week is Monday-Friday. - Program is not designed for re-test or make up
exams these are handled after school
17Teacher Created List for Study Hall
- Teachers submit a list of students that have
received a grade lower than a 75 on an attempted
assignment to their Lead Teacher in an excel
format. - The lead teacher submits their departmental list
to an assigned Secretary, who compiles the list
and sends it out each Friday afternoon to the
staff via email.
18Study Hall Decisions
- When a student is on the study hall list for more
than one teacher... - A priority list is created based upon school
data - Math - Science English Social Studies
Electives - If a teacher is absent, students are sent to a
teacher who teaches same content subject. - UIL participants are required to participate in
this program prior to leaving for a competitive
event.
19ZAP (Zeros Are Not Permitted)
- Main Objectives
- Grade on a Monday-Friday timeline.
- We do not rescue students who want to do all the
work at the end of a grading period. - If they do not attempt work or do not turn in
homework they are assigned referral by Thursday
of each week. - Program is designed to Improve Academic
Performance by Students. - To Increase student sense of responsibiltiy for
academic success - To encourage effort from students in the
classroom - Give teachers an alternative for students who do
not engage in learning. Program is designed to
make the alterative for not doing work worse than
doing the work in class or at home.
20Who Is ZAPd
- If a student does not attempt class work or
homework, the teacher submits an electronic
referral for not attempting work. - Once the student is assigned a referral, the
administrator handles it as if it is a discipline
referral. They are assigned to the ZAP List
and after school detention on Friday. - ZAP is inclusive of all students. If a UIL
participant is assigned to ZAP, they do not leave
campus early to travel with their respected
teams. They satisfy the program requirements and
have to find a way to the competition. - Once a student is ZAPd during any 6 week grading
period, they are on the ZAP list the remainder of
that six week grading period. - Teachers in the 4 core areas may request study
hall for a ZAP student
21The ZAP Program
- Attendance is taken at the door to ensure student
arrive - An Administrator is in charge of implementing the
ZAP program each Friday - Students are place in a seating arrangement that
is conducive for a non-social, academically
successful environment. - Students are given the explanation on why they
are in the ZAP program. They are given a TAKS
assignment that must be completed before leaving
the designated area to go home. - Typical assignments can include
- TAKS related Writing Prompts
- TAKS Academic vocabulary for Math and Science
- TAKS mapping skills
- TAKS math foundation skill practice (3rd,
5th 8th grade skills)
22Releasing for Friday Programs
- Announcements are made to release the Study Hall
students to thier classrooms 5 minutes is given
so they can retrieve materials from their
lockers. - ZAP students are then swept into the hall, where
the administrative team escorts the students to
the ZAP area. - SUCCESSful students are given choices on what
they do during the remaining 25 minutes of their
school week - Clubs, Intramurals, Computer labs open, library,
class meeting, pep rallies, assemblies....etc.
