1
Psalm 2
  • The Nations Rage
  • But The Messiah Reigns

2
Psalm 1 2 Compared
  • Central theme in both Antagonism between the
    righteous and the wicked
  • Individual level in chapter 1
  • Kingdom level in chapter 2
  • Two paths godly or ungodly
  • Psalm 1 2 serve as an introduction
  • Following 148 Psalms are an unfolding,
consequence and manifestation of these two
    diametrical choices

3
Historical or Messianic Fulfillment?
  • David and Solomon are favorites for a historical
    fulfillment but without biblical support
  • This Psalm is certainly Messianic
  • 7 New Testament quotations all give application
of this Psalm to Jesus the Christ (Acts 424-28)
    (Acts 1332-33) (Heb.15) (Heb.55) (Rev.227
    125 1915)

4
Outline of Psalm 2
  • Psalm 2 is a song with four stanzas
  • First, we hear from the Nations (vs.1-3)
  • Second, we hear from the Father (vs.4-6)
  • Thirdly, we hear from the Son (vs.7-9)
  • Finally we hear from the Spirit through the
    Psalmist (vs.10-12)

5
The Nations Rage (vs.1-3)
  • Why would anyone rebel against God?
  • He holds mans destiny in His hand
  • Consider the goodness and severity of God
    (Rom.1122) (Rom.58) (Rom.831-32) (2Thess.16-9)

6
Romans 1122
  • Therefore consider the goodness and severity of
God on those who fell, severity but toward you,
goodness, if you continue in His goodness.
Otherwise you also will be cut off.

7
Romans 58
  • But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in
that while we were still sinners, Christ died for
    us.

8
Romans 831-32
  • 31 What then shall we say to these things? If God
is for us, who can be against us?
  • 32 He who did not spare His own Son, but
delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not
with Him also freely give us all things?

9
2 Thessalonians 16-9
  • 6 since it is a righteous thing with God to repay
with tribulation those who trouble you,
  • 7 and to give you who are troubled rest with us
when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with
    His mighty angels,

10
2 Thessalonians 16-9
  • 8 in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who
do not know God, and on those who do not obey the
gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ.
  • 9 These shall be punished with everlasting
destruction from the presence of the Lord and
from the glory of His power,

11

destruction when the right path seems so obvious?
