3Historical or Messianic Fulfillment?
- David and Solomon are favorites for a historical
fulfillment but without biblical support - This Psalm is certainly Messianic
- 7 New Testament quotations all give application
of this Psalm to Jesus the Christ (Acts 424-28)

- Psalm 2 is a song with four stanzas
- First, we hear from the Nations (vs.1-3)
- Second, we hear from the Father (vs.4-6)
- Thirdly, we hear from the Son (vs.7-9)
- Finally we hear from the Spirit through the
Psalmist (vs.10-12)

- Why would anyone rebel against God?
- He holds mans destiny in His hand
- Consider the goodness and severity of God

6Romans 1122
- Therefore consider the goodness and severity of
God on those who fell, severity but toward you,
goodness, if you continue in His goodness.
Otherwise you also will be cut off.

- This rebellion and rejection fulfilled
- When both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the
Gentiles and the people of Israel, were gathered
together (Ac.425-28)

said 'Why did the nations rage, And the people
plot vain things? - 26 The kings of the earth took their stand, And
the rulers were gathered together Against the
LORD and against His Christ.'

- This rebellion and rejection fulfilled
- When both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the
Gentiles and the people of Israel, were gathered
together (Ac.425-28) - The apostles persecution brought this Psalm to
their minds (Ac.417-22) - The prayed, not for the removal of the
persecution, but for the boldness to continue to
speak Gods word (Ac.429-31)

- As we read the opening words of Psalm 2, we
should realize - That being on Gods side will mean opposition
(2Tim.312) and even hatred (Jn.1518-20)

- 18 "If the world hates you, you know that it
hated Me before it hated you. - 19 "If you were of the world, the world would
love its own. Yet because you are not of the
world, but I chose you out of the world,
therefore the world hates you.

servant is not greater than his master.' If they
persecuted Me, they will also persecute you. If
they kept My word, they will keep yours also.

- As we read the opening words of Psalm 2, we
should realize - That being on Gods side will mean opposition
(2Tim.312) and even hatred (Jn.1518-20) - That no matter how the nations rage and the
people plot, it is vain - That if God is for us, who can be against us
(Rom.831)

- How does God respond to mans rage, rebellion and
conspiracy? - Does He quake, tremble, apologize, negate His
will, alter His plan? - No! He laughs, He scoffs, He distresses them in
their schemes! (vs.4-5)

- The rejection of Jesus did not thwart Gods plan
or purpose to establish His kingdom it
accomplished it! (Ac.222-24,26)

through Him in your midst, as you yourselves also
know-- - 23 "Him, being delivered by the determined

resurrection (Ac.1314-33 esp.33) - Refers to Christ being begotten from the dead
(Col.118) - The resurr. proved His Sonship (Rom.14)

- Ask of Me and I will Give You (v.8)
- A custom among great kings to give favored ones
whatever they might ask (Esth.56 Matt.147) - Jesus has but to ask of God and have
- His enemies would become his inheritance and His
empire would be worldwide (Matt.2818-19) (Mark
1615-16)
39The Son Remembers (vs.7-9)
- You shall break them with a rod of iron (v.9)
- The Father not only gave Christ the right to rule
but also the power to conquer, judge and punish - The rule of Jesus cannot be resisted without
utter destruction (Rev.227 125 1915)

- How should man respond to these truths?
- Should he continue to rage, plot, take counsel
against the Lord and His Anointed? - The Psalmist calls for correction before it is
too late - Be wise
- Be instructed
- Serve the Lord with far and trembling

- Kiss the Son
- Mans only hope is to acknowledge Gods Son as
King - Ancient custom of bowing and kissing the kings
hand as a sign of subjection - We too, must acknowledge the rule of Christ over
us as our only Lord (Ac.236)

- God has given all authority to His Son
(Matt.2818) and speaks to us only through Him
(Heb.11-2) - Jesus is our only access to God and all spiritual
blessings (Jn.146 Eph.13) - Jesus is our only hope to make peace with God and
escape Gods wrath (Rom.58-11) - Jesus is our only hope to turn our hopelessness
into happiness
