  • Main Ideas
  • Great Britain is not the mother country because
    it does not take care of its people in the
    colonies.
  • America will financially benefit from
    independence.
  • People are born with Natural Rights that should
    be respected by their government.

The Declaration of Independence
  • July 2, 1776 Congress voted unanimously.
  • July 4, 1776 Adopted the Declaration.
  • Where at the 2nd Continental Congress.
  • Who written by Thomas Jefferson.
  • (other committee members were Benjamin Franklin
    and John Adams).
  • Influence Enlightenment Ideals, John Locke.

Main Ideas
  • People are entitled to enjoy natural rights.
  • Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
  • All Men are Created Equal- free citizens are
    political equals.
  • Governments
  • MUST respect rights of the people.
  • Receives it power from the people.
  • If a government threatens the rights of the
    people the people have a right to get rid of
    that government. (John Locke-Social Contract
    Theory).

The Declaration is split into four parts
  • Part One Preamble
  • Legally and philosophically justifies the
    revolution against Great Britain.
  • Part Two Beliefs
  • Explains the political principles of natural
    rights and the social contract theory.
  • Part Three Grievances
  • List of unfair acts of King George III.
  • Part Four Formal Declaration.
  • A formal declaration of independence for all 13
    colonies/states.
