2
What Simple Machines Do
  • Simple machines are used to make work easier.
  • Work scientifically means to move something.
Simple machines make it easier to move things.

3
Examples of Simple Machines
  • There are are only 6 types of simple machines.
  • They are a pulley, lever, wheel and axle,
    wedge, screw, and inclined plane.

4
Parts of a Lever
  • There are four different parts of a lever.
  • There is a fulcrum, effort force, load or
    resistance, and the lever arm.
  • All of these parts put together makes a lever.

5
How to Set up a Lever
  • The best way to set up a lever is to put the load
or resistance closer to the fulcrum.
  • Then put your hand as far away as possible.

6
Parts of a Pulley
  • The parts of a pulley are the load or
resistance, pulley wheel, effort force, and rope
    or line.

7
Supporting Lines Affect Your Effort Force
  • Supporting lines make work easier.
  • We ran a test one time in class and have proven
that the more supporting lines you have, the less
effort force you have to use.
  • For example, say you have five supporting lines
the supporting lines cut your effort force into
1/5 of the force would have needed to move it
    cave man style.

8
How Supporting Lines Affect the Distance Your
Hand and Load Moves
  • The supporting lines make it so your hand moves
    more than the load.
  • Example You have three supporting lines and your
hand should move 3x as far as the load.

Definitions
  • Simple Machines A simple machine is used to make
    work easier.
  • Load/ Resistance The weight that you have to
    lift or move.
  • Work Work means to move something.
  • Effort Force The force you use to move something.
