Pudding Lane Thomas Farynor the Kings baker, had
a shop in Pudding Lane . It was in the middle of
the city. The wooden houses were very tall and
had lots of floors . They were so close that the
fire spread very quickly. It was so dirty that
you could barely see your own feet. It was very
smelly too!
4
The houses burning. The houses were made of wood
so they burnt quickly. Men pulled them down with
fire hooks. Some houses were blown up to stop the
fire moving from house to house. 13,200 houses
were destroyed.
5
People Escaping Some people escaped from the
fire by jumping from roof to roof because
the houses were very close together. Some
escaped by boat and some by horse and cart. Nine
people died. Some people tried to hide in stone
buildings but the hot stones exploded.
6
St Pauls Cathedral A cathedral is a very big
church. The stones got so hot that they
exploded . The lead on the roof melted. The
new cathedral was designed by Sir Christopher
Wren . It was burned again in World War 2.
7
The Old London Bridge The Old London Bridge was
built on stone pillars across the river Thames.
As well as carrying horses, carts and people the
bridge had buildings on it all the way acrossa
lot of shops and houses. The bridge used to have
a drawbridge to keep the people in the city safe
from their enemies.
8
Old Fire Engines In 1666 there was no fire
brigade. The kings soldiers put fires out. They
used fire hooks, squirters and buckets of water.
Their helmets and buckets were made out of
leather and wood. There was a wooden fire engine
but the water leaked and it did not work.
9
King Charles 2nd Thomas Farynor was the backer
to the King. The King was King Charles 2nd . He
was born in 1630 and died in 1685. He had 17
children but 3 died when they were born. He wore
a long curly wig and had a dog named after him
a King Charles spaniel .He worked to try to stop
the Fire. He said that all new houses should be
made out of stone and brick and not wood and
straw.
10
Samuel Pepys He is famous because he wrote a
diary every day. He told us what happened inThe
Great Fire. 300 houses burned down on the first
day. He buried his cheese and wine in a hole in
the garden to keep them safe. He Worked for the
Navy.
11
The Monument The Monument was built to remember
the Great Fire of London. It took six years to
build. It is about 202 feet high and has 311
steps up to the top. From the top you can see
all of London. It is painted gold at the top so
you can see it from far away.
