The Debate and the Win
  • Kennedy won the debate against Richard Nixon.
  • Kennedy won the Presidential election of 1960.
    He won the popular vote by a small margin.
  • He was the youngest President and the first
    Catholic President to be elected.

The New Frontier
  • Shortly after he was elected he brought forth his
    domestic policy.
  • tax reform, federal aid to education, medical
    care for the elderly under Social Security, civil
    rights, aid to poorer areas, and an advanced
    space program.

The President and Congress
  • Pres. Kennedy had a hard time getting measures
    passed through a largely conservative Congress.
  • Among Kennedys Bills not to be passed through
    Congress were a rise in federal aid to education
    and an increase in the minimum wage.

The Civil Rights Movement
  • It was one of the most important issues during
    that time period.
  • Many Civil Rights activists were discouraged to
    see Kennedys lack of support on the issue.
  • Kennedy established the Presidents Committee on
    Equal Employment Opportunity-to end racial
    discrimination in government hiring.
  • In late 1962, Kennedy passed an executive order
    forbidding segregation to occur in federally
    subsidized housing.
  • Kennedy appointed 5 segregationist judges to the
    federal bench in the Deep South.

The Space Program
  • When the Soviets launched the first man into
    space, Kennedy decided that the U.S. would send
    the first man to the moon.
  • John Glenn was the first American in space in
    1962.
  • Kennedy believed that Space was the next frontier
    and Americans should not stand by and watch
    other nations explore that frontier.

  • The Soviets wanted an end to Western nations
    occupying West Berlin.
  • In 1961, the Soviet held East Berlin erected a
    wall to prevent people from escaping to West
    Berlin.
  • The Berlin Wall was a huge concrete wall with
    barbed wires that cut in the heart of the city
    separating family and friends.
  • President Kennedy traveled there in June 1963 to
    speak to the people of Berlin about freedom.

The Cuban Missile Crisis
  • Russian Premier Nikita Khrushchev ordered his
    field commanders to launch their nuclear weapons
    if invaded by the U.S.
  • After 7 days, Khrushchev ordered all Soviet
    supply ships away from Cuba and agreed to remove
    the missiles from Cuba.
