Title: CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM: PART II

1
CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM PART II
  • CIRCULATION

Mr. Carlin
2
Blood Flow
  • Blood enters the heart from the body in the
    superior and inferior venae cavae.
  • Blood from the walls of the heart goes through
the coronary sinus into the RIGHT ATRIUM.
  • This is de-oxygenated blood!

3
Blood Flow in Heart
  • The deoxygenated blood goes through the a
three-cuspid valve, the TRICUSPID valve into the
    RIGHT VENTRICLE.
  • It is pumped into pulmonary arteries to pick up
    oxygen in the lungs.

4
  • The blood returns to the heart in the pulmonary
    veins.
  • It enters the LEFT ATRIUM.
  • This is oxygenated blood!

5
  • Atria open into ventricles.
  • Blood passes through Atrio-ventricular canals.
  • Valves prevent the blood from flowing backwards.

6
Coronary Blood Flow
7
  • Blood passes through the MITRAL OR BICUSPID VALVE
    into the thick-walled LEFT VENTRICLE.
  • Muscular contraction pumps blood through the
semilunar valves into the AORTA and throughout
    the body.

8
  • An interventricular septum divides the 2
    ventricles.

9
Question
  • Why is the left ventricle thicker than the right
    ventricle?

10
Answer
  • More force is required for contraction to pump
    blood throughout the body.

Review
