The preliminaries
  • Dont make your idea fit the criteria of the
    funding programme,
  • Be organised! Draw up a work schedules with
    deadlines.
  • Be careful with whom you discuss your idea.
  • Dont rush the process
  • Experience shows that at least six months are
    needed for good preparation.

The early process (1)
  • Identify matching funds most EU programmes
    demand 15 50 own contribution. This can be
    staff time etc., not necessarily cash.
  • Seek out partners as soon as possible. They will
    need to provide a letter of intent or commitment.
  • Remember you are not master of your own destiny
    and are reliant upon third persons for input.

  • Make good agreements with each partner
    concerning their contribution, especially
  • the budget
  • Discuss your idea with the sponsor if you can
    BEFORE you submit, or send a 1-2 page summary of
    the idea. Try to get a green light before
    embarking on the process.

Drawing up the proposal

  • Try to work with a small team rather than alone
    or with a large group. Always include a
    bookkeeper.
  • Set internal deadlines which are one week
    earlier than the actual deadlines. This gives
    some buffer time if things go wrong (and they
    will!).
  • Keep your partners fully informed about the
    process.

Prior to submission
Check, and double check, that you have satisfied
the eligibility criteria. ALWAYS ask a
colleague to check your application. Check that
all questions have been answered, all annexes
etc. submitted. Everything that should have been
done, has been done.

If you are successful ..
Crack open the champagne and celebrate. Now the
hard work really begins

If you arent...
Shrug your shoulders and start thinking about the
next proposal .. Do try to find out why it was
rejected. It will help next time.
