- To ensure that all staff requesting community
healthcare equipment have an understanding of the
availability,appropriateness and criteria for
use. Including the setting up and demonstration
of equipment.
3OBJECTIVES
- Awareness of departmental services and staff
- Appropriate use of telephone and fax numbers
- Understand the criteria of use and issue
- Equipment loan periods,appropriate environment
- Accessing equipment. ie correct use of referral
forms - Familiarisation of equipment manual/equipment
- Correct set up of equipment
- Ability to demonstrate use of equipment in the
home

- Who can refer?
- Trust medical, nursing and therapy staff
12Community Healthcare Equipment Services
- For what reason?
- To provide appropriate nursing care,
facilitate independence or to enhance the quality
of life.

- How long is the period of loan?
- Initial period of loan will be six months.

- Long term loan for chronic disabled patients.

- Can the department refuse to issue equipment?
- Yes, if the equipment is deemed to be
unsuitable or outside the service contract. - Specialist equipment is authorised, if
available, by relevant specialist nurses.

- Does the equipment need to be serviced?
- Mechanical and electrical equipment is
serviced at six monthly or annually intervals.

- What about temporary residents?
- Temporary residents will not be issued with
equipment from CHES unless there is active
District Nurse involvement.

- What do social services provide?
- Equipment that is shown to fulfil a social
need.

- Do we issue to Residential and Nursing Homes?
- Selected equipment will be provided into
residential homes to assist nursing care by a
District Nurse. - We do not issue equipment to nursing homes.

- Is the equipment cleaned between use?
- All community healthcare equipment is cleaned
in accordance with the decontamination policy. -
- Equipment is also checked for defects before
re-issue.

- How long does it take to deliver equipment?
- Two working days, provided equipment is in
stock and referral is made before 12 midday.

- What happens if the department runs out of
equipment? - Substitution of equipment sent out with letter
attached. - Patient Dependency Rating Form sent to the
referrer.

23Equipment Recall System
- Referrer identifies short term or long term use.
- Methods of recall include individual patient
letters, contact with community nurses and recall
folders. - Replacement is made with Social Services
equipment for long term use. e.g hoists
24Risk Assessment
- The risk assessment form is provided to guide you
in providing best practice. - It should be placed in the patients records.
- It should be used in conjunction with the
Community Healthcare Equipment Manual to assist
you with equipment selection.
