Conjunctions
  • Conjunctions connect words, groups of words, and
    whole sentences.
  • There are two types of conjunctions
  • Coordinating Conjunctions
  • Correlative Conjunctions

Coordinating Conjunctions
  • Coordinating conjunction connect words or groups
    of words that are similar in form noun with
    noun, phrase with phrase, sentence with sentence,
    and so on.
  • Nouns ? The seals and sea lions live there.
  • Pronouns ? He or I will lead the nature talk.
  • Verbs ? The scientists planned and practiced.
  • Adjectives ? That photo is attractive but
    expensive.
  • Adverbs ? He works quickly yet carefully.
  • Prepositional Phrases ? The hikers followed the
    trail over the hill and to the beach.
  • Sentences ? You should come soon, for next week
    we will be leaving.

Look at the coordinating conjunctions
  • Harbor seals cannot walk or travel on land with
    their hind flippers.
  • Sea lions and furred seals travel well on land.
  • These two water mammals are similar yet
    different.
  • Immature males play together, for this is good
    practice for fighting.

Using Correlative Conjunctions
  • Correlative conjunctions are pairs of
    conjunctions that connect words or word groups.
  • There are five pairs of correlative conjunctions
  • bothand
  • neithernor
  • eitheror
  • not only but also (sometimes other words can
    come between the words but also)
  • whetheror

Correlative Conjunctions
  • Nouns ? Both seals and walruses are protected
    species.
  • Pronouns ? Neither you nor I could have known.
  • Verbs ? Ill either walk or jog to the beach.
  • Adjectives ? Her aquarium is not only new but
    also custom-built.
  • Adverbs ? He draws both skillfully and
    creatively.
  • Prepositional Phrases ? Our team is not only in
    the playoffs but also in the division lead.
  • Sentences ? Either we do the research here, or we
    will do it in Canada.

Look at the correlative conjunctions
  • Walruses are found not only in the Pacific Ocean
    but also in the Atlantic Ocean.
  • They are both large and agile.
  • Not only can they turn their hind limbs forward,
    but they can also move all four limbs to walk on
    land.
  • Their tusks are used either for fighting or for
    climbing.

Interjections
  • Interjections are words that express sudden
    excitement or strong feeling.
  • Sometimes an interjection is followed by a comma
    and connected to a sentence.
  • My, that was an exciting trip.
  • Sometimes, an interjection is followed by an
    exclamation mark and is separated from the
    sentence that follows it.
  • Wow! That killer whale jumped very high.

  • Gosh! Some dolphins eat one third of their
    weight in fish each day.
  • Wow! Spinner dolphins have more than 200 teeth.
  • Darn, I didnt know that they dont breathe
    through the nose.
