Unit Overview Brightly coloured boats painted in
the traditional roses and castle motifs are
unique to the canal system. This art form
developed as an escape from the cramped living
conditions in the back cabin of a narrow boat.
The roses represented the gardens and the castles
the houses, that many of the boat families could
only dream of. Students will explore traditional
canal art and its relevance to boat families.
They will make an intricate rose design plate
imitating real canal ware and using a cut and
stick method instead of brushes and paints.
Curriculum and Objectives ? The unit is all
about investigating art, craft and design. It
considers different styles of canal art and its
historical context. Through the activities pupils
are encouraged to think creatively as well as
analyse and work with colours, choosing
appropriate tones for shading and highlighting.
Students also look at the roles and purposes of
artists, craftspeople and designers working in
different times and cultures.
  • Objectives
  • Discover why rose and castle designs existed
  • Analyse the colours and patterns used in rose
    designs from real canal ware
  • Develop manual dexterity and use of scissors
  • Outcomes
  • Listen to an explanation of Rose and castle art
    history
  • Choose appropriate colours for making roses
  • Design a rose plate layout
  • Make a rose plate using coloured paper.

  • ? Higher ability groups or older students can
complete this quickly and then try mixing their
own colours and adding black or white to make
    them lighter and darker.
  • ? Helpers/LSAs should encourage students to be
looking at the board so they don miss the colour
    change during the quiz
  • ?Resource PowerPoint presentation Lighter or
    Darker
  • Main Activities

    each design.
  • ?Resource worksheet rose and castle colours
pencils or other colours that can be mixed to
    copy a colour
  • ? This can be made easier by providing a choice
of premixed colours or even giving a variety of
squares to be stuck in of similar different and
    matching colours
  • Make a rose and castle Watercan
  • Use the worksheet to cut and stick and colour a
water jug in rose and castle style.
  • ? Helpers/LSAs will need to help students at the
end with the assembly of tha can
  • ?Resources worksheet from http//www.wow4water.n
et/kids/activities (hook the duck under a
shower!) make your own water can.
  • ? For a shorter quicker activity there are a
couple of other activities from this website on
this theme. (hook either the black duck with

Lesson 3 - After Your Trip.

Starters Recapping roses and castles Students
have an opportunity to write down everything that

the floating classroom in as much detail as
possible. Some students then get to read theirs
out to refresh everyone's memory Less able

Lesson 3 - After Your Trip.

Main activities Rose and Castle Plates ,
Finishing up The plates are completed using the
card from home or some provided by school Rose
and Castle plates display board. Every student
writes one sentence from their starter in neat
big letters about the floating classroom and puts
it with their finished plate. As students
complete their plates and sentences they bring
them to the teacher to assemble them on a large
classroom display board along with any photos,
showing your time on the the floating classroom.
Plenaries Inevitably with an activity such as
this some students will finish ahead of others by
a considerable margin. It is therefore likely you
will need several plenary activities to hand
depending on how much the students got done in
the floating classroom session. A range of
simple fun activities are available on
thewow4water website (see above for link). These
range from word searches to colouring and
origami. Choose several to have ready for your
class.
Homework's Drawing and Caption (20 mins) ?
Students choose one of the activities they have
done on the boat randomly by being given a number
corresponding to an activity (see below).
Students must draw a picture of themselves doing
the activity on the boat and write a caption
explaining what they learned doing the
activity. 1. Spotting Old and New Things 2.
Making Victorian Children's Toys 3. Time
Travelling
