    Flt from Heathrow
  • Greeted by Father Fenias and the youth choir who
sang a welcome song to us
  • A quick drive around the town before checking
    into our hotel.
  • We then went for a late breakfast (our 3rd that
day!) at 3pm. Back to the hotel for an early
    night 7pm

4
DAY 2 Sunday Morning Service in Sta Maria
Madelena Church
  • Picked up by Father Fenias for Sunday morning
service in Sta Maria de Madalena church, Pemba
  • Church was in the process of being re-built, they
had put up a welcome banner and decorated the
    church in our honour
  • Conditions were very hot/humid
  • Traditional anglican service conducted in
    Portugese
  • English teacher translated for us
  • Gifts presented to them and they did likewise
  • The choir sang fantastically
  • Went back to the hotel where the Mothers Union
had cooked a fantastic feast for us The choir
    also sang additional songs

5
DAY 3 Tour of Pemba Visit to HIV/Aids Hospital
  • Picked up at 8.15 by Father Fenias and driven to
    his office which is
  • Father Fenias car started leaking petrol, we both
thought it was going to catch fire
  • After saying prayers with his office colleagues
we were driven around the town incl the old town
    and port
  • Visited the HIV/AIDS hospital which was situated
near the Cholera Hospital before returning to his
    office
  • We were given a new car and driver, however this
car also had broken down and needed a bump start,
which was obliged by two of his Female staff
  • The meal at the hotel was interesting as we were
accompanied during our main course by a large rat
that ran across the floor, additionally the
waiter removed our drinks which were still half
full and worse still he laughed about it without
    offering us another one!

DAY 4 Visit to African Bush Parish - Chiure
District
  • 6am start for a trip out to two African bush
    parishes in Chiure District
  • 3hr drive with a brief stop for breakfast arrived
at the small Anglican Community in Mahurunga
  • Congregation were very welcoming singing us songs
as we approached in our 4 x 4 vehicle
  • Then traveled on a few more miles to the St Peter
    St Paul's Parish in Chimoio
  • Introductions were held outside under a tree by
ourselves, the youth group the Mothers Union
  • We were given a goat as a welcoming gift which is
a great honour we are told by Father Fenias, I
think he was a bit miffed as he had only been
given a chicken on his initial visit. We in turn
gave them our gifts which included Mothers Union
items and books, pens and notebooks for the
    children
  • Toured their new church which was in the process
of being built which they require additional
    funds for completion
  • After feeling uplifted after this visit we put
the goat in the back of the 4 x 4 and set off for
home. While taking a brief pit stock and the side
of the road, the goat decided to make a run for
it, closely followed by Lois. Unfortunately for
the goat, it didnt get away.

7
DAY 5 Visit to the Parish Priest House
  • Designated a day off so-to-speak after quite a
    busy schedule to date
  • Father Fenias took us to the original vicarage
owned by the church which Father Fenias wants to
    move into, but needs re-building
  • Off to the local beach in the afternoon for a
walk, we then learnt that all sewage is
discharged untreated directly into the sea

DAY 6 Meeting held with the Mothers Union
  • Visited the Mothers Union house to understand
    their needs
  • They had laid on an excellent spread. All cooking
    was conducted outside using charcoal
  • 7 ladies attended, the house was very clean
although rather on the cramped side
  • The Leader of the Mothers Union read out their
requirements in Portugese which was translated by
    Father Fenias
  • We both gave an overview on how our Church
operated and the structure advising that although
we didnt have an MU, the mothers and toddlers
were very active within the Church and met
    regularly.

DAY 7 Meeting held with the Youth Team

we were taken to the house where we met with the
    Mothers Union the day before
  • Again they had laid on a fantastic spread
(Including our Goat), this time the Man of the
    house attended
  • At 2.30pm we left the house and travelled to the
Church which by now had no roof on it. The Youth
team gave us a presentation in Portugese on what
they do as a group and their current needs and
wishes, translated by an English teacher
  • They sang us a couple of lovely songs whereby we
then gave them gifts for the children
