What is the Emancipation Proclamation?

• A Federal document written by President Abraham
  Lincoln during the Civil War
• Declared that any slaves held in areas controlled
  by the Confederates were free.
• Led to the ratification of the 13th Amendment,
  which abolished slavery in the U.S.

• The Emancipation Proclamation affected all
  Americans.
• It freed slaves in the Southern States that were
  under the Confederacy.

How did the Emancipation affect the Northern
States

• It gave them a moral advantage in the quest to
  abolish slavery
• It allowed Northerners who allowed fugitive
  slaves to stay in their homes to free them
  without concern of being captured

  they lost workers.

  independence from the rest of the U.S.

  Americans to become part of the Civil War and
  many fought for the North.
• It financially damaged the Confederacy and
  eventually shortened the war.
• It kept Great Britain from providing aid to the

  favor of the Union.
