1
The Academic ADL Co-Lab
  • Judy Brown, Director
  • November 2003

2
The ADL Vision
3
What are the Problems?
  • Cant move content from one system to another
  • Tracking progress is proprietary
  • Cant locate content

4
How to Solve?
  • Industry standards
  • Buy in
  • SCORM Sharable Content Object Reference Model

5
ADL Functional Requirements
  • Accessibility access instructional components
from one remote location and deliver them to many
    other locations
  • Interoperability use instructional components
developed in one location, with one set of tools
or platform, in another location, with a
different set of tools or platform
  • Adaptability tailor instruction to individual
    and situational needs
  • Reusability incorporate instructional components
    into multiple applications
  • Durability operate instructional components when
base technology changes, without redesign or
    recoding
  • Affordability increase learning effectiveness
significantly while reducing time and costs

6
Government Organizations working with ADL
  • Employment and Training Administration (ETA-DoL)
  • Office of Policy (DoL)

How the SCORM Fits
Instructional Capability, Modeling
Simulation, Intelligent Tutoring, Economic
Models, Policy, RD, etc.
Technical Specification
SCORM is necessary, but not sufficient ...
11
ADL Co-Laboratories
  • An open collaborative environment for sharing
    learning technology research, development, and
assessments. The Co-Lab goals are to
  • Develop and refine the SCORM
  • Assess ADL tools and prototypes
  • Facilitate collaborative resource sharing
  • Collect and disseminate data and lessons learned
  • Conduct tutorials and demonstrations
  • Support and advise federal, state, and local
    agencies, and private-sector partners

12
ADL Co-Labs and Partnership Lab
13
What Is the Academic ADL Co-Lab?
  • Focal point for the nations universities and
colleges in promoting high quality, reusable
    content for distributed learning
  • Established to promote collaboration in the
    research, development, demonstration,
    implementation, and evaluation of ADL
    technologies and products
  • Serves as an academic partner and ADL link to
    test, evaluate, and demonstrate ADL-compliant
tools and technologies to enhance teaching and
    learning
  • Serves as an academic demonstration site for ADL
tools and content, including those developed by
the federal government, academia, and industry
