Application Form
The Allotment Regeneration Initiative aims to
promote and support innovative and good practice
in allotments management. The Flagship Grant
Scheme aims to fund projects to broaden the user
base of allotments and engage with new people as
well as well as practical infrastructure work to
return neglected sites to use as vibrant
community amenities. If a whole site is not
viable as allotments complementary uses will be
considered.
Criteria
Applications will be accepted up to 21 May
2004 Grant requests can be between 2,500 -
25,000 Charities, Allotment Societies and other
Non-Statutory bodies can apply If you have any

2Section Two about your proposal
- Please provide a description of what it is you
want funding to do, and why this will benefit the
allotment site on no more than three A4 pages.
You should describe the allotment site, the area
it is located in, what the problems are and
explain how your plans will revitalise the site.
Remember the person viewing this application will
not necessarily know your site or your area
personally. Include all relevant information such
as -
- How many plots are on the site? How many
plots are derelict? How large is the site How
is the site currently used? What are the
problems? Explain the regeneration plans and show
how the plans will revitalise the site How do
you know this work is needed? How many people
will benefit from the plan? What are the aims
and purposes of the project? How will you know if
you have been successful What is the full cost
of the project? - Please attach any additional information (e.g.
photographs, plans, drawings, quotes for work,

3Frequently Asked Questions
How much can we apply for and for how long? The
upper limit for an application is 25,000 but
there will only be a few grants of this size.
The amount you request should be supported by a
significant amount of match-funding from other
funders or through help-in-kind such as donations
of materials or volunteer labour . Grants can
be for any period up to a maximum of five
years. Where might we be able to get
match-funding? The New Opportunities Fund
Peoples Places Programme, National Lottery
Awards for All Programme, The Community Fund,
Neighbourhood Renewal Community Chest, local
charitable trusts and ask your Voluntary
Services Council or council grants officer for
information on grants in your area. For guidance

we already have a grant from EFF? Yes, you can
already be in receipt of a grant from EFF and
still apply to this programme. Equally, applying
to the ARI fund does not preclude you from
applying to EFFs mainstream grant-giving
programme to fund other work programmes. Can we
apply again if we have had an ARI application
refusal? Yes, you can apply for ARI again if you
have had an application refused. Examples of
initiatives funded by previous ARI grants scheme
(Round 1) Park Farm Allotment Association are
developing two allotments for use by people with
learning difficulties. The Blackpool Youth
Offending Team is developing an allotment project
to improve healthy eating, social Integration and
skills building amongst young offenders. Cam
Dursley and District LETs work with a young
mothers and children group, providing informal
learning in nutrition and growing
food. Additional examples of initiatives that
exhibit good practice The Elder Stubbs Garden
Group in Oxford works with people with mental
health needs integrating them fully into the
life of the allotment community. The Natural
Growth Project in London helps to establish
refugees on their own allotment, while helping
them to work through torture-related traumas and
to acclimatise them to their new country.
4Terms Conditions
- If you accept a grant from Allotments
Regeneration Initiative (ARI)/Esmée Fairbairn
Foundation (EFF) - it will be on the understanding that you have
agreed to the following general terms and
conditions - Receipt of the grant cheque will be acknowledged
by you and confirmation made in writing that the
money will be spent on the purpose approved by
ARI/EFF - No changes to the project will be made without
the agreement of ARI/EFF. ARI/EFF will be - informed of anything exceptional relating to the
grant purpose or the organisation as soon as - it happens.
- A brief progress report summarising your
activities and how they went will be supplied, if
requested by ARI/EFF. - Accurate and comprehensive financial records of
the spending of the grant will be kept and - made available if requested for audit or
evaluation purposes by ARI/EFF. - ARI/EFF may use your name in publicity material
and, if requested, you will acknowledge - the grant in your annual report or other
publicity relating to the work being funded. - Any part of the grant that is not required for
the purposes approved will be refunded to
ARI/EFF. - ARI/EFF reserves the right to withhold a grant or
require repayment if it is found that any form of - deliberately false information was provided to
ARI/EFF. - ARI/EFF reserves the right to withhold a grant or
require repayment if the organisation concerned - becomes insolvent or goes into administration,
receivership or liquidation, and if the grant has
not - already been spent on its intended purpose.
- Sometimes additional conditions will be added to
take into account aspects of a particular grant.
