Breathing Emergencies
  • Respiratory distress is a condition in which
    breathing becomes difficult.
  • Respiratory distress may lead to respiratory
    arrest, a condition in which the breathing stops.

Why seconds count
  • 0 minutes When breathing stops the heart will
    soon stop beating.
  • 4-6 minutes Brain damage possible
  • 6-10 minutes Brain damage likely
  • Over 10 minutes Irreversible brain damage

Respiratory Distress Can Be Caused By
  • A partially obstructed airway
  • Illness
  • Chronic conditions such as asthma
  • Electrocution
  • Heart Attack
  • Injury to head, chest, lungs or abdomen
  • Allergic reactions
  • Drugs
  • Poisoning
  • Emotional Distress

Signals of Breathing Emergencies
  • Trouble breathing slow or rapid breathing,
    unusually deep or shallow breathing, gasping for
    breath, wheezing, gurgling or making high pitched
    noises.
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness
  • Pain in chest or tingling in hands, feet or lips
  • Unusually moist or cool skin
  • Flushed, pale, ashen, or bluish skin color

UNIVERSAL PRECAUTIONS
  • USE FACE MASK
  • WHEN USING A FACE MASK ON INFANTS, TURN THE MASK
    SO THE NOSE PIECE IS ON THE CHIN
  • ONLY USE ON VICTIMS YOU ARE SURE ARE NOT
    BREATHING
  • ADJUST AIR FLOW TO THE SIZE OF VICTIM YOU ARE
    TREATING

Steps for Rescue Breathing
  • Check scene, check victim
  • Call 911
  • Tilt head and lift chin
  • Look, listen, and feel for breathing
  • IF NOT BREATHING
  • Pinch nose and give 2 breathes
  • Check pulse. If pulse present but NO breathing
    give
  • 1 breathe every 5 seconds for an adult
  • 1 breathe every 3 seconds for an infant or
    child
  • Recheck for pulse and breathing about every 1
    minute
  • If breathing returns place in recovery
    position

IMPORTANT
  • ONLY USE IN EMERGENCIES OR IF TRAINED AND
    CERTIFIED BY THE AMERICAN RED CROSS

WHAT TO DO NEXT
  • IF VICTIM IS BREATHING ON THEIR OWN, THEN WAIT
    FOR 911 AND REASSURE
  • PLACE VICTIM IN RECOVERY POSITION
  • CONTINUE TO MONITOR ABCS
