4 Subset Searching
- define a group of specific domains and then
search within that subset -
- subsets can even be used for current awareness by
combining subset search techniques with an RSS
feed or e-mail alert.
5Domain Limiting
- Domain limits are one of the older limits that
search engines made available. The limit is
typically available on the advanced search page
as well as by command line - site .gov

- The shortest version of a domain is the most
comprehensive - sitestate.edu search will match pages just at
- state.edu
- www.state.edu,
- www.lib.state.edu,
- ics.chem.state.edu.
7Yahoo! Subset Syntax
- Yahoo! can process very long search queries.
There appears to be no obvious limit to the
number of search terms

- Google's search box on the main page has a
256-character limit and a 32-word query limit.
Using all the site operators (even using the I
symbol rather than the OR to save characters)
means that with about 16 sites
9 Expanding searching to subset
- Gigablast is the only one that handles

- look on that site to see if there is an
official conference blog - Check if the conference organizers have
established a descriptive tag that bloggers are
advise to use to identify blog posting - Go to a blog search engine
- Simply enter the name of the event to find posts
from conference bogglers - If you do discover a descriptive tag associated
with the conference use that tag in you search

- An undocumented but powerful feature of Googles
search is the ability to search within a
particular date range - A date range search has nothing to do with the
creation date of the content and everything to do
with the indexing date of the content - Google can index pages several times and each
time it does so the date on it changes. - Google doesnt stand behind the results of a
search done using the date range syntaxes.
