2What is the weather today? What is the difference
between weather and climate? What is the
atmosphere?

4DISCUSSION Presentation
- Based on the materials you have read on the
internet, - Discuss how, and with what effect, is the
composition of the atmosphere being altered by
human activity. - Suggest measures which could and should be taken
to restrict the potential damage caused by
increasing the amount of carbon dioxide in the
atmosphere.

- The Structure of the atmosphere
- Troposphere
- Stratosphere
- Mesosphere
- Thermosphere
9Troposphere
- Sea level to 13 km
- Temperature decrease by 6.4 oC/1000m
- Because the surface is warmed by insolation first
- Contains most of the atmosphere mass
- Most of climatic phenomena take place
- Marked by the boundary called tropopause
10Stratosphere
- 13 km to 48 km above ground
- Temperature inversion
- Concentration of ozone (O3)
- Absorbs incoming ultra-violet radiation
- Burn meteroites
- Upper limit marked by stratopause
11Mesosphere
- Temperatures fall rapidly
- No mass to absorb incoming radiation
- Lowest temperature -90 oC
- Strongest wind speeds (nearly 3000km/h)
- Upper limit marked by mesopause
12Thermosphere
- Temperatures rise rapidly with height
- Reaching 1500 oC
- High concentration of atomic oxygen which absorbs
ultra violet
