What is a volcano?

• An opening exposed on the Earths surface where
  volcanic material is emitted.
• The emitted material is stored below the earths
  surface in a magma chamber.
• Deep inside Earth, between the molten iron core
  and the thin crust at the surface, there is a
  solid body of rock called the mantle.
• When rock from the mantle melts, moves to the
  surface through the crust, and releases pent-up
  gases, volcanoes erupt.

From Magma to Lava

• Extremely high temperature and pressure cause the
  rock to melt and become liquid rock or magma.
• When a large body of magma has formed, it rises
  through the denser rock layers toward Earth's
  surface.
• Magma that has reached the surface is called
  lava.

Lava types

• Pillow-eruptions that occur under water or ice.
  Made up of elongated interconnected flow lobes
  that are circular.
• Pahoehoe-smooth, billowy, or ropy surface. Flows
  tend to be relatively thin.
• Aa-rough, jagged surface. Flows are relatively
  thick.

All About Me

• My name is Stephanie Stevens. I am currently a
  fifth year senior at Western. My major is
  elementary education with an emphasis in
  integrated creative arts. I will also have minors
  in math and science. I also am working on my
  early childhood endorsement, because I love
  working with little kids! I plan to graduate in
  April 2007. This is my fourth school, so I am
  taking a little longer than expected. I have also
  attended Grand Valley State University, Muskegon
  Community College, and KVCC.
