Title: Interactions and Visualizations for People with low literacy

Interactions and Visualizations for People with
low literacy and low Information Seeking Skills
For
Barnet CAB
By
Prof. William Wong (IDC, Middlesex
University) Poorva Lavate (IIT, Bombay,
India) Aditi Singh (DA-IICT, Gandhinagar, India)

A Little About Myself
  • Born and brought up in an army background, I
have been fond of hard work and extracurricular
activities alike. I have had the opportunity to
represent my school in swimming and my batch in
college in badminton. I have also been fond of
other sports like sailing, white water rafting,
horse riding and diving to name a few.
  • Currently doing my Bachelors in Technology
(B.Tech) in India at Dhirubhai Ambani Institute
    of Information and Communication Technology
    (DA-IICT), Gandhinagar , Gujarat
  • It is the only institute which offers this kind
of a course which is a combination of Computer
Science, Electrical and Electronics and IT
    (Information Technology) courses.
  • One of the earlier projects that I did in my
second semester was to build a teaching aid for
visually challenged students of biology. This
greatly increased my interest in design and human
    machine interaction.
  • As part of the course curriculum of our college
  • Rural Internship - in a village in India -
studying the implementation of ICT to rural India
  • Industrial Internship - Bangalore - with the
Reliance Group - studying the working and
operation of the Media Convergence Node there.
  • Research Internship - IDC, Middlesex University -
thats what we are going to talk about

Barnet CAB
  • Charitable Organization that helps citizens to
    live a better life
  • Run by volunteers and provides help free of
    cost
  • To enhance this noble cause - the Barnet
decided to put up kiosks to be able to provide
information to more and more people.
  • The Fit for purpose study that was done
    earlier under the able
  • guidance of Prof. William showed us that the
    kiosk would be more
  • efficient if it implemented the following
  • Answers rather than link to link approach
  • Problem oriented information structure as
    additional navigation mechanism
  • So, during the last two months we have been
involved in analyzing how this can be made more
efficient and useful for the people we are trying
    to help.

4
The Card Sort Experiment
  • Purpose To be able to determine the manner in
which the clients think about the titles on the
cards and visualize them. This gives us an idea
of how they would seek information and hence how
best it should be provided to them.
  • Why the card sort experiment ?
  • Clients have complex problems
  • Hence, needs to be dealt with in unison not
    isolation
  • Hence, the need to identify the clusters of
    problems of the clients
  • Methods that we used to carry out the experiment
  • Cards have headings on them taken from various
sites that are used by the kiosk and the client
is asked to sort out the cards.
  • First method - clients sort out the cards in any
way that the titles make sense to them
  • Second - The sort out the cards in relation to
    the problem that they have
  • Third - We sort the cards as per their
classification on the websites and ask the
clients to look for the information they need

The set of three methods were carried out by
Poorva, internee from IIT and Aditi (DA-IICT).
5
Inference of the results of the experiments
  • Analysis of results of first method revealed that
  • About 49 of the total classifications that were
made by the people were not consistent with the
way that they are represented in the websites.
  • This maybe lead to a situation in which the
client is not able to find the information where
he visualizes it to be. So, he may not be able to
get the information he is looking for.
  • In the mean time we received the database of
client information of the past year
  • So, our data set became larger
  • 1237 clients
  • data spanning one year (from 1/4/2005 to
    31/3/2006)

Using that data set we went on to identify the
clusters at two levels

Characteristics of Interface
  • Based on the clusters identified
  • User should not lose context of where he is
  • To show other information that might be related
    to his problem
  • To allow user to look for solution to a complex
problem as opposed to a simple one
  • Easy to interpret the relationships of the
    clusters
  • To implicitly use color and spatial
    relationships to depict connection between
    cluster members
  • Ultimately, provide information to their
problem in a more efficient manner

Housing and council tax benefits are means tested
benefits, which help people on low incomes to pay
their rent and council tax. Housing benefit is
called rent rebate if you pay your rent to the
council or rent allowance if you pay your rent to
a housing association or a private landlord. Who
can claim? You have to be liable to pay rent and
/ or council tax for your home to get housing and
/ or council tax benefit. For further information
please contact us on 020 8359 2111.You can claim
whether you are working or not, receiving other
benefits, renting privately, or living in a
hostel or other similar accommodation.Normally
claims for housing benefit should be made by the
person responsible for paying the rent to the
landlord. For council tax benefit the person who
is liable to pay the council tax for the property
should make the claim. In most cases if you reside
with your landlord/landlady and he/she is a
close relative, you may not be entitled to
housing and council tax benefits.Unless you are
receiving the Guarantee Credit of Pension Credit,
if you have capital of 16,000 or more, you
cannot receive housing benefit or main council
tax benefit. Savings over 3,000 (or 6,000 if
you or your partner are aged over 60) affect how
much housing and council tax benefit you can get.
