Title: To Print: Drop Dead

1
To Print Drop Dead
  • Just kidding.
  • No, really. Drop dead.

2
Specific Tasks Abandoned
  • Well, buying any, for a start.
  • OK, not entirely true
  • Outsourcing (minimal) processing to OCLC
  • 50 cut in speculative purchasing
  • Increasing patron-driven acquisition
  • Using buy-on-demand ebook programs

3
How Do We Choose?
  • Usage data
  • Print circulation down by 53 since 1997
  • Reshelvings down by 74
  • Research patterns
  • No one uses OPAC for discovery
  • Local (thats local) curriculum and research
    needs

4
What Have We Stopped Completely?
  • Technically, probably nothing. But mostly?
  • Journal check-in
  • Journal binding
  • Claiming
  • MARC cataloging

5
Retraining
  • Two-dimensional problem
  • Ability
  • Willingness
  • For staff, retraining mainly means streamlining
  • For catalogers, it means learning Dublin Core and
    CONTENTdm
  • Learning curve should be short

6
Impact on Customers
  • Early days yet. Anticipated
  • Much less wasted money
  • Faster (instantaneous) response to requests
  • Greater speed-to-stacks
  • More flexibility (POD)

7
What Have We Learned?
  • Err on the side of too much communication.
  • Document, document, document.
  • The wrong decision will lead to problems. So will
    the right one.
  • Consensus will never lead to change. If youre
taking a leaders pay, do a leaders work.
  • Let the manager manage.
  • Staff morale matters patron morale matters more.
  • Give your staff credit for everything good take
    the blame for everything bad.
  • When in doubt, shut up and listen.
