Title: GEOMETRY

1
GEOMETRY
  • Learning the Basics

2
BASIC GEOMETRIC IDEAS
  • Point
  • Marks an exact location in space
  • Line
  • A collection of points along a straight path
    extending endlessly in both directions
  • Line Segment
  • Part of a line between two endpoints
  • Ray
  • Part of a line that has one endpoint and extends
    endlessly in one direction
  • Angle
  • Formed by two rays with a common endpoint called
    a vertex
  • Plane
  • A flat surface extending endlessly in all
    directions

3
TYPES OF ANGLES
  • Right Angle
  • Measures exactly 90o
  • Obtuse Angle
  • Measures greater than 90o but less than 180o
  • Acute Angle
  • Measures less than 90o but greater than 0o
  • Straight Angle
  • Measure exactly 180o

4
CLASSIFYING TRIANGLES BY SIDE MEASURES
  • Equilateral Triangle
  • Three sides have the same length
  • Isosceles Triangle
  • Two sides have the same length
  • Scalene Triangle
  • No sides have the same length

5
CLASSIFYING TRIANGLES BY ANGLE MEASURES
  • Acute Triangle
  • All angles are acute
  • Obtuse Triangle
  • There is one obtuse angle
  • Right Triangle
  • There is one right angle

6
CLASSIFYING QUADRILATERALS
  • Trapezoid
  • One pair of parallel sides
  • Parallelogram
  • Two pair of parallel sides
  • Rhombus
  • A parallelogram with all sides congruent
  • Rectangle
  • A parallelogram with four right angles
  • Square
  • A rectangle with four congruent sides.

7
INVESTIGATING POLYGONS
  • Pentagon
  • A five-sided polygon
  • Hexagon
  • A six-sided polygon
  • Octagon
  • An eight-sided polygon
  • Nonagon
  • A nine-sided polygon
  • Decagon
  • A ten-sided polygon

8
PARTS OF A CIRCLE
  • Center
  • Point B
  • Diameter
  • AC
  • Radius
  • BD
  • Arc
  • CD
  • Semicircle
  • AC
  • Chord
  • AD

9
TOOLS OF THE TRADE
  • Protractor
  • An instrument used to measure angles
  • Compass
  • An instrument used to draw circles
