How do tornadoes form?

• During the spring time, cool air rushes down from
  Canada.
• This cool air meets the hot, dry air coming up
  from Mexico.
• The two winds meet in an area known as Tornado
  Alley.
• The warm air pushes below the cool air. Then
  tornadoes can occur.

How long can a tornado last?

• Tornadoes can last from several seconds to more
  than an hour.
• Most tornadoes last less than 10 minutes.

Where can tornadoes occur?

• Tornadoes mostly occur in Texas, Oklahoma,
  Arkansas, Illinois, Kansas, Indiana, Missouri,
  Nebraska, and Iowa, but tornadoes can occur
  anywhere as long as the conditions for one have
  been met.

How far can a tornado travel?

• A tornado can travel miles before tearing itself
  apart.

Safety Precautions

• If on a road, never hide under an overpass if a
  tornado approaches.
• Sometimes tornadoes will develop in areas in
  which no tornado watch or warning is in effect,
  so stay alert for changing weather conditions.

Interesting Facts

• In 1992, a single tornado was on the ground in
  North Carolina for a record-setting 160 miles.
