taken in by a she wolf who suckled them.
  • Once they got older they decided to build a city
in the same place they were found.
  • There was one problem. Who was going to be king?
  • They asked for a sign from the gods and Romulus
    was to be king.
  • Remus was jealous and fought his brother to the
    death. Romulus won.
  • Rome was established on April 21 753 BC.

9
Roman Emperors
10
Julius Caesar
  • Ruled with a military mind set.
  • Married Cleopatra Queen of Egypt
  • Took control of the Roman Empire in 49 B.C.
  • Took away most of the power from the senate which
    angered them.
  • On March 15 44 B.C. Caesar was murdered.

11
Octavianus (Augustus)
  • Killed the men who murdered his uncle Caesar.
  • Became successor to Rome.
  • Gave back most of the power back to the Senate
which in return he got much more power such as
being able to veto anything the senate proposed.

12
Tiberius
  • Was Augustus stepson.
  • Tiberius was 55 years old when he took over Rome.
  • He did not trust anyone except Seianus commander
of the Preatoric garde, who were the emperors
    bodyguards.
  • Used the lex majestatis, which gave him the power
to give the death penalty to anyone who hurt him.
  • Crucified Jesus of Nazareth.

13
Caligula
  • Successor of Tiberius, who was also his nephew.
  • Did not last long since we wanted to be
worshipped and mandated that people built altars
    in his name.
  • Killed Judes since they did not want to worship
    him.
  • Ordered to name a horse as a consul.

14
Claudius
  • Was not taken serious at first because he was
    short and stuttered a lot.
  • Claudius became to be one of the better emperors
    Rome had.
  • He knew what was going on in the Senate,
    internally and externally.
  • He respected the senate so his life was not taken
    from them.
  • His wife Agrippina poisons him so her son can
    take over the empire.

15
Nero
  • Nero succeeded Claudius after his mother
    poisoned him.
  • He did not want to be Emperor of Rome.
  • Agippina tried to take over Rome so he had her
    killed.
  • In 64 A.D. Rome burnt down. It was said Nero
caused the fire because people saw him singing
    the End of Troy.
  • Blamed the burning of Rome on the Christians so
    he prosecuted them.
  • He built Rome much bigger than what it was.
  • People started to conspired against Nero. Once he
found out he ordered everyone who was part of the
conspiracy to commit suicide or he would kill
    them.
  • A revolt began on Gaul and Nero fled.
  • Nero committed suicide at the age of 31 after he
    was driven into a corner.

16
Roman Society/Life
  • In the beginning of Roman society was the census.
  • Every five years each male Roman citizen had to
declare his family, wife, children, slaves and
riches. If they did not do so they would be sold
    into slavery.
  • The census controlled Roman society
  • A Romans identity and honor was depicted by
    others, not themselves.
  • The Romans would usually get up early and worked
    a six hour day.
  • Many worked as architects, engineers, foremen,
    sculptors, stonemasons, carpenters, bricklayers
    and simply day laborers.

17
Roman Religion
  • Romans did not have a specific belief.
  • Religion was based on a mixture of fragmented
    rituals, taboos, superstitions, and traditions
which they collected over the years.
  • People were able to practice any for of religion
just as long they praised and respected the
    Emperor.
  • The Jews and Christians were the only two groups
that did not agree with praising the emperor
since they believed in only one God.
  • Christianity was taken in more by women since it
    treated them as equals.
