1
Shooting Facilities Archery, Rifle and Pistol
2
Planning and Designing a Shooting Facility
  • Major factors that determine facility design
  • Funding
  • Availability of appropriate space
  • Nature and scope of program
  • Quality of the planners, architects, and
    engineers involved in the project

3
General Guidelines
  • Participatory planning
  • Needs assessment
  • Site selection
  • Build to code
  • Support selection
  • Risk management

4
Archery
  • Art or skill of shooting a bow and arrow
  • Shooting categories
  • Butt shooting
  • Clout shooting
  • Roving
  • Field archery shots often made uphill or downhill
    and around obstacles

5
Outdoor Target Archery Competitions
  • FITA Round
  • 36 arrows shot at four distances (144
    arrows) (70, 60, 50, 30 meters)
  • Shot in groups of six (ends) within specified
    time
  • Olympic Round
  • Direct elimination, head-to-head competition
  • 70 meters
  • Winner advances until a champion is determined
  • All matches are 18 arrows
  • Quarterfinals, semifinals, and finals are 12
    arrow matches

6
Indoor Target Archery Competitions
  • Held for Recurve (Olympic) and Compound Divisions
  • Held at 25 or 18 meters
  • Shoot 60 arrows at a 60cm diameter target face
  • All ranges must meet or exceed FITA and NAA
    specifications

7
Venue Support Equipment
  • Barriers
  • Scoreboards
  • Flags
  • Speaker system
  • Timing control equipment
  • Archer identification
  • Field glasses

8
Bows
  • Used for target archery, held in one hand and
    drawn with the other
  • May have adjustable arrow rest on the riser
  • Bowstring is permitted to have a center serving
    to fit arrow nocks
  • An audible or visual draw checker may be used
  • Stabilizers and torque compensators are allowed
    if not touching anything

9
Bows continued
  • Recurve Bow
  • Relatively short bow
  • Preferred over the longbow
  • Consists of a handle riser and two flexible limbs
  • Ends of limbs curve away from each other
  • Compound Bow
  • Have cams and cables, holding is weightless
  • Used for target archery competitions

10
General Archery Equipment
  • Arm guard
  • Chest guard
  • Finger protectors
  • Quiver
  • Arrow straightener
  • Grip/arrow pull
  • Fletching jig
  • Stringer
  • Stringing rig
  • String server

11
Equipment Care and Maintenance
  • Bow never lay it on the ground and keep it dry
  • Bow strings use bow wax to keep strings
    waterproof
  • Arrows protect from getting wet
  • Target butts do not place on damp floors or
leave them uncovered in the rain
  • Target faces remove faces while moistening butts

12
Rifle and Pistol
  • Commonly used in indoor ranges
  • Air pistols
  • Air rifles
  • Handguns
  • Rifles with muzzle velocities

13
Space Needs
  • Range development
  • 50-100 feet between target and firing line
  • Industry standard length is 84 feet 4 inches
  • Other space needs include
  • Parking areas
  • Restrooms
  • Storage
  • Office space
  • Lobby area
  • Circulation space

14
Ceiling Height and Construction
  • Ceiling height 10-12 feet is recommended
  • Provides adequate overhead clearance
  • Keeps lighting, ventilation, and target retrieval
    systems costs to a minimum
  • Slab ceiling is the industry standard
  • Require few baffles and guards
  • Guards are required

15
Shooting Stalls
  • Function as protective dividers between shooters
and expelled casings, misdirected shots, and
    other distractions
  • Provide a stable mounting position for range
    equipment
  • Equipped with self-controlled target retrieval
    systems
  • Typically constructed of double-wall steel liners

16
Wall Construction
  • Provide a protective shell between interior of
the range and the building exterior or adjacent
    spaces
  • Poured concrete or concrete blocks used
  • Sound-dampening tiles are recommended

17
Flooring
  • Durable enough to withstand high volume of stray
    shots
  • Use hardened concrete floor
  • Non-slip surfaces
  • Some have vinyl floor covering
  • Carpeting is NOT recommended

18
Bullet Traps
  • Plate and pit trap
  • Venetian blind trap
  • Steel escalator trap
  • Granular rubber trap

19
Target Retrieval System
  • Purpose is to place the target downrange and
retrieve it in a safe and convenient manner
  • Two types of target retrieval system
  • A guide wire system
  • Steel track system

20
Risk Management
  • Shooting facility design
  • Staffing
  • Insurance
  • Emergency Procedures
  • Equipment Procedures
  • Equipment and Supplies
  • Facility
  • Post rules and Signage
  • Protective equipment
  • Proper location
  • Provide adequate spacing
