Introduction
  • Internet resources increasingly more connected
    with the classroom setting.
  • The websites were documented in Internet Address
Book (IAB) under the file name WilliamsEunethiaA3A
    (IAB).doc.
  • This research report reviewed twenty (20)
websites to link websites to the classroom
    learning experience.
  • All the websites were rated in the Internet
Address Book and notations as excerpts were
logged in a separate file called
    WilliamsEunethiaA3BResExc.doc.
  • The research report will elaborate on five (5) of
these websites to present an effective
curricular base for teaching mathematics in
    Secondary schools.
  • This curriculum development aid focuses on
interactive learning with an introduction to the
history of math followed by lessons, tutorials,
games for higher order thinking and ends with a
sampling of career paths in math.
  • The goal of this curriculum is to prepare the
math student with knowledge of how to perform in
mathematics along with a sound introduction of
the history of math and knowledge of possible
career paths where math skills are needed.

Summary Findings
  • The choice of twenty (20) took some thought about
what would really be useful for teaching
mathematics in Secondary schools. I settled on a
mix of websites that would provide a well rounded
base for math curriculum development and that
would be both challenging and interesting. The
twenty websites consisted of the following
    breakdown
  • History 3, Lessons/Tests, 3Tutorials 5,
    Instructional Materials 2
  • Resource Materials/Books 3, Professional
    Society/Newsletter 1
  • Math Careers 1, Games 2
  • Most of these websites were given ratings of
    4-5(1worst, 5Best). A selection of the top
five websites are listed below. All of these top
websites received an overall rating of five (5).

Detailed Findings
  • History of Math
  • The website History of Math http//aleph0.clarku
    .edu/djoyce/mathhist/ presents a good
introduction to the history of mathematics. It
talks about how a leading turn of the century
mathematician named David Hilbert summarized the
most important problems in mathematics down
through the ages. He called them the 23 most
important mathematical problems. Here are a
    sampling of the 23
  • Problem 1.Cantor's problem of the cardinal number
of the continuum. (The continuum hypothesis.) K.
Gödel. The consistency of the axiom of choice and
    of the generalized continuum hypothesis.
Princeton Univ. Press, Princeton, 1940. Problem
2.The compatibility of the arithmetical axioms.
Problem 3.The equality of two volumes of two
tetrahedra of equal bases and equal altitudes.V.
    G. Boltianskii. Hilbert's Third Problem Winston,
Halsted Press, Washington, New York, 1978. C. H.
    Sah. Hilbert's Third Problem Scissors
    Congruence. Pitman, London 1979. Problem
4.Problem of the straight line as the shortest
    distance between two points. (Alternative
    geometries.)

Detailed Findings
  • The Math Forum _at_ Drexel
  • The website http//mathforum.org/library/resource_
types/instructional_soft/ Math Forum at Drexel is
an all around excellent resource for tutorials
and resources. It operates under the School of
Education at Drexel. The forum tabulates 315
sites and has a library with an archive. It also
provides a dictionary for mathematics. It
includes plenty of games, lessons and interactive
activities. In addition, it offers workshops and
interactive services from experts in math. This
website would be a foundational resource for my
teaching. I am well acquainted with Drexels
quality in education. (I was taught there. ) I
highly recommend this website. This is one that
I will surely use a lot!

Detailed Findings
  • Careers in Math
  • The website http//www.math.utep.edu/mathmajor/car
eer.html provides information about eight (8)
careers in math. A listing follows.
  • Actuary
  • College and University Faculty / Researcher
  • Computer Scientist and Computer Engineer
  • Industrial Mathematician
  • Operations Research Analyst
  • School Teacher - Kindergarten, Elementary, and
    Secondary (K-12)
  • Statistician
  • Systems Analyst
  • This website is a good way to complete the
students thinking about mathematics. Math does
lead to financial security! Integrating this
website topic into the base math curriculum for
high school students breaks up the monotony of
numbers and focuses them on what inevitably comes
    after high school-Life!

  • Careers in Math

Conclusion
  • All of the 20 websites are very valuable tools
and resources for math in Secondary schools. The
    resources are comprehensive foundational
materials that can accommodate large classroom
    sizes.
  • I would recommend grouping the websites into
curricular bases like I ordered my top five
websites to complete thinking about math as a
life cycle. Teachers could also use these
websites for theme building such as Tutorials.
  • Overall, I would conclude that these 20 websites
are high quality enough to be used as a mini
    database for math curriculum development.
