Teenage Suicide

• Teenage Suicide is the third leading cause of
  death among people between the ages of 15-25
  years.
• 500,000 teenagers attempt suicide, about 5,000
  succeed every year.
• More people kill themselves than being killed by
  someone else.

Warning Signs

• Change in eating and sleeping habits.
• Withdrawal from family and friends.
• Statements of hopelessness, helplessness, and
  worthlessness.
• Stating comments like I wont be a problem for
  you much longer and nothing matters anymore.
• Violent actions, rebellious, running away from
  home.
• Drug and or alcohol abuse.
• Neglect of personal appearance.
• Not tolerating praise or reward.
• Withdrawal from usual pleasurable activities.

Reasons Why

• To end unbearable emotional pain caused by a
  variety of problems.
• Usually so depressed they cannot see any other
  way out.
• Attempted suicides are usually cries for help.
• Sexual or physical abuse.
• Feeling of hopelessness, helplessness, and
  worthlessness.
• They feel total destitute.

How to help someone from attempting suicide

• Listen to the person.
• Show the person you care by say things like
• I care about you so tell me how youre feeling
• Share with me the pain youre feeling
• You mean a lot to me so I want to help you
• Talk openly with the person.
• Try to show the person that you understand them.
• Ask the person if he/she has a plan.
• Get professional help.

Here are some DONTS with a suicidal person

• Dont ignore signs.
• Dont act shocked.
• Dont judge the person.
• Do not give false assurances like everything
  will be fine.
• Dont worry about breaking the suicidal persons
  confidence, tell other trusted people.
• If the person seems to be in immediate danger DO
  NOT leave the person alone.

Other Facts

• White males account for 70 of all suicides.
• 70 of suicides are by drug overdose, 60 are by
  firearms, and then hanging as the third most
  common method.
• A person commits suicide every 15 minutes in the
  United States and an estimated suicide attempt is
  made every minute.
• More men die from suicide than women, the ratio
  is 45.
• More women attempt suicide, more men complete
  suicide.
