  • Lousy Lice
  • The Facts of Lice
  • by V. Lickliter

2
What are head lice?
  • Lice are very, very small crawling insects.
  • They do not fly, hop, or jump.
  • Each louse (the name for one of the lice) is
brown and gray and only about the size of a
    sesame seed (2mm).
  • Lice are parasites (pair-uh-sites), which means
that they live off other living things.

3
Where are head lice found?
  • Head lice live on the human head
  • close to the scalp.
  • behind the ears.
  • toward the back of the neck.
  • on top of the head.

4
Lice love everyone!
  • Anyone can get head lice if they have contact
with an infested person who is infected.
  • You cannot get head lice from grass, trees, or
    animals.
  • Head lice arent fussy. Clean, dirty, short,
straight, or curly hair all they want is blood
    beneath the scalp!

5
Life Cycle of the Head Louse
Adult female glues the egg or nit to the hair
close to the scalp.
Nymph looks like a small adult and hatches in 7
to 10 days.
Nymph sheds skin 3 times to reach adult size in
10-14 days.
6
Symptoms of Head Lice
  • Constant itching of the head and back of the neck
  • Infected scratch marks or a rash on the scalp
  • Nits attached to individual hairs
  • Nits are tiny, whitish, oval eggs firmly
attached to one side of the hair shaft at an
    angle.

7
Treatment for Head Lice
  • Kill all live lice.
  • Check for and remove all the nits by combing and
    manual nit picking.
  • Clean the infested persons belongings and home
    environment.

8
Life Without Lice
  • Avoid close physical contact with a person who
has lice. Avoid touching and especially putting
    your heads together!
  • Dont try on hats that belongs to other children.
  • Never share a comb or brush. Use your own, and
dont lend them to anyone else.

9
  • If you wear headbands, hair clips, ribbons,
barrettes, or other hair accessories, be sure to
    keep those to yourself, too.
  • Do not share helmets, hats, or headphones.
  • Always use your own sleeping bag and pillow when
    sleeping away from home.
  • Sharing is usually a great idea- except when it
comes to sharing those little lice!!!
