Technology NewsBlackberry Future in Trouble?

• In 2003 a federal court ruled that RIM had
  infringed the NTP patents
• Subsequent appeals by RIM have failed to stop the
  case, and a tentative settlement reached earlier
  this year broke down after the two sides failed
  to agree on details
• On Wednesday, the presiding judge in the case
  refused to delay the case or enforce the failed
  settlement
• He is expected to hold a hearing soon on a
  possible injunction forcing RIM to cease using
  NTP's technology.

Technology NewsIntel Blasts Negroponte!

• Potential computer users in the developing world
  will not want a basic 100 hand-cranked laptop
  that is due to be rolled out to millions,
  chip-maker Intel Corp. Chairman Craig Barrett
  said Friday.
• Schoolchildren in Brazil, Thailand, Egypt and
  Nigeria will begin receiving the first few
  million textbook-style computers from the
  Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) media
  lab run by Nicholas Negroponte in early 2006.
• "Mr. Negroponte has called it a 100 laptop I
  think a more realistic title should be 'the 100
  gadget'," Barrett, chairman of the world's
  largest chip maker, told a news conference in Sri
  Lanka.

• United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan has
  welcomed the development of the small,
  hand-cranked lime-green devices, which can set up
  their own wireless networks and are intended to
  bring computer access to areas that lack reliable
  electricity.
• Negroponte said at their launch in November the
  new machines would be sold to governments for
  schoolchildren at 100 each but the general
  public would have to pay around 200, still much
  cheaper than the machines that use Intel's chips.
• Barrett said similar schemes in the past
  elsewhere in the world had failed, and users
  would not be satisfied with the new machine's
  limited range of programs.

Windows --- Vista!

Topic 1Windows Vista!

• Windows Vista is the next version of Microsoft's
  Windows operating system, superseding Windows
  XP.
• It was previously known by its codename
  Longhorn.
• Longhorn Server, the successor of Windows Server
  2003, is yet to be named.
• The scheduled release date for Windows Vista is
  July 23, 2006.
• That release date is only scheduled for PC
  vendors so that systems will be made Vista-ready
  before Christmas. The general public availability
  is projected to be after early September 2006.

• Windows Vista will carry the version number 6.0
• Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows Server 2003
  being Windows NT versions 5.0, 5.1 and 5.2,
  respectively
• 'Windows Vista' is commonly abbreviated as WinVI,
  since that matches both its version number in
  Roman numerals and the initial letters of its
  name

• Aero is the codename for the new graphical user
  interface in Windows Vista.
• Its an acronym for Authentic, Energetic,
  Reflective and Open.
• Intended to be a cleaner, more powerful, more
  efficient and more aesthetically pleasing GUI, it
  also includes new transparencies, animations and
  eye candy.
• As of yet, nothing has been shown of Aero in any
  Vista builds. However, Microsoft has made it
  clear that the changes are by no means
  superficial.

• Windows Vista has several planned new features
  such as
• Entirely new user-interface called Aero
• Improved searching technology dubbed Search
• An XML specification designed for document
  formats and similar in many ways to Adobe's PDF
  entitled XPS.
• Current speculation is that there will be several
  different editions of Windows Vista being
  released, including starter, home, and
  professional editions.

• Konfabulator is a JavaScript runtime engine for
  Windows and Mac OS X that lets you run little
  files called Widgets that can do pretty much
  whatever you want them to
• Widgets can be alarm clocks, calculators, can
  tell you your WiFi signal strength, will fetch
  the latest stock quotes for your preferred
  symbols, and even give your current local
  weather
• What sets Konfabulator apart from other scripting
  applications is that it takes full advantage of
  today's advanced graphics. This allows Widgets to
  blend fluidly into your desktop without the
  constraints of traditional window borders.
