3The History of the Sea Cadet Corps
1856 A Clergyman Sailors returning home from
the Crimean War formed Naval Lads Brigades (
1st Whitstable in Kent) to help orphans in the
back streets of English sea ports.

The Charge of the Light Brigade Crimean War
41899. Queen Victoria presented a 10 note to
Windsor Unit for uniforms. 25th June 1899 became
known as the Birth of the Corps.

51919 Admiralty recognition was granted. Admiral
Commanding Reserves to do Annual Inspections. Re
named, Navy League Sea Cadet Corps.

61937
Lord Nuffield gave 50,000 to fund the
expansion of the Corps.
1939 At the start of the war there were nearly
100 Units with some 10,000 Cadets.
71942
HM King George VI became
Admiral of the Corps.
Girls Naval Training Corps
was
formed as part of the National Association of
Training Corps for Girls (NATCG).
Officers were appointed in
the Royal
Naval Volunteer Reserve (RNVR).
81947 Sea Cadet Council was formed from the Navy
League and Royal Navy to govern the
Admiraltys support for up to 22,000
cadets.
1955 The Commandant
General Royal Marines was
granted
permission to form the
Marine Cadet Detachments.
91964 The GNTC was affiliated to the Sea Cadet
Corps.
1976 The Navy League was renamed the Sea Cadet
Association.
1980 The admission of girls into the Sea
Cadet Corps was approved. Girls Nautical
Training Corps became a Contingent of the SCC.
101992 The formal introduction of Junior Sea
Cadets.
1992 Girls completely integrated into SCC so the
GNTC closed.
112004 The Sea Cadet Association merged with the
Marine Society to form a new charity, The
Marine Society Sea Cadets.
