CREATEC
  • Choosing your conferences

2
Choosing your conferences
  • Perth is the most isolated city in the world
and sometimes it feels that way as a researcher.
Even though we have email and the internet, its
not easy to approach prominent scholars in the
field for an opinion or advice. One of the
easiest ways to remedy this situation is to
attend conferences. They are a great opportunity
to get to know your colleagues in Australia or
in the world. Conferences provide networks and
(publication) opportunities not to be missed.

3
Conferences
  • CREATEC or other bulletin boards make sure that
    you hear about them.
  • Local
  • National
  • International
  • Yearly conferences of a particular organisation
    (ANZCA, JEA etc.)
  • One offs to a particular topic

4
Conferences
  • National conferences are usually the yearly
    conference of a particular organisation.
  • And there are many to choose from.
  • Decide whether you want to fall in with a wide
ranging crowd or a very focussed one.

5
Conferences
  • International
  • Again, there are the yearly conferences of the
    big international organisations.
  • The biggest in the communication field are IAMCR
    http//www.iamcr.org/
  • and ICA http//www.icahdq.org/ .
  • Joe can tell you about e-media.

6
Conferences
  • The most logical step is to start with the
    national conference in your field.
  • There you meet your colleagues from around the
country, learn who is doing what and hear about
    the most recent research.
  • You start networking very important when you are
looking for research partners but also when you
are looking eg for markers of your postgraduate
    students theses.

7
Conferences
  • Give a paper!! So that others know what you are
doing and you can measure your own work against
that of others and can get input from your
    colleagues.
  • Find out beforehand whether refereed conference
    papers will be published.
  • Often this is nowadays done on websites.
  • http//profed-iamcr.cci.ecu.edu.au/papers.php

8
Conferences
  • If and when you can afford it, go to
    international conferences. Youll realise that
thats where it is at. But some of these
conferences are very large and they take courage
and strategic planning when first confronted with
the conference catalogue. Listen to as many
papers as you can. Ask for a copy of that paper.
It will take a while before it gets published. Be
    brave.

9
