  • Fluency in their first language is KEYbaseline
for fluency in their target language

Wide Range of Variance
  • Hard to categorize these students
  • Some have oral, but not written native language
    skills
  • Some are highly educated in both languages
  • Some are struggling culturally with our school
  • Some are bright, but cant articulate their
    intelligence, especially orally in class

8
High-Quality Instruction
  • Makes a BIG difference!
  • Understand their linguistic needs
  • Allow them to interact with their peers
  • Use teaching strategies that benefit ALL the rest
    of your students
  • Focus on language acquisition FIRST

9
Promote Academic Literacy
  • Reflect on the language demands of your course.
Provide direct instruction on how to read the
    textbook, take notes
  • When you establish your learning goals, include a
    language objective. Engage students in
pre-reading and pre-writing activities to produce
    a better product.

10
Promote Academic Literacy
  • Emphasize academic vocabulary development.
    Include non-linguistic representations to
    increase your students understanding.
  • Activate students prior knowledge or explicitly
build prior knowledge in its absence (i.e. The
    Civil War)

11
Promote Academic Literacy
  • Increase your students oral interaction and
extend their academic talk. Engage students in
    extended discussions to increase their
    comprehensible input.
  • Make a point of reviewing new learning each day,
so students are not exposed to new concepts just
    once.

12
Highly Motivated to Learn
  • Most EL students will work harder than your
average students, especially if they are fluent
    in their native language.
  • Many EL students have parents who push/support
them at home to work hard and learn in class.
  • Many families arrived to find The American
    Dream

13
When you call home
  • Dont be surprised if your call is answered by
    someone who speaks another language.
  • Politely ask if there is an adult at home who
    speaks English.
  • If not, ask to speak to your student. His/her
    parents are watching/listening.
  • Reach out and support your EL students.
